Mapleton Girl Scouts hold Court of Awards ceremony
MAPLETON NEWS
Mapleton Daisy and Brownie Troop 1133 held their annual Court of Awards ceremony Thursday, March 25 at the Mapleton Baptist Church. The sanctuary was decorated with paper lanterns the girls made in honor of India’s Festival of Lights.

MAPLETON DAISY AND BROWNIE GIRL SCOUT TROOP 1133 collected orders of Girl Scout cookies during their annual cookie sale in January. The troop decided to donate all 104 boxes that were purchased by members of the community to the Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery (C.A.N.C.E.R.) group. This group of volunteers assembles tote bags and delivers them to patients in treatment. For the next few months, those patients will be the recipients of these cookies, thanks to the generosity of the troop’s family and friends. Pictured are, front row, from left: Paige Trask, Brooke Trask, Alexus LaFerriere, Sydney Robichaud, Jenna Mountain, Katelyn Amero, Rebecca Rider, Delaney Alward, Amanda Winslow and Madelyn Buzza. Back row: C.A.N.C.E.R. board members Louise Calabrese, Sue Nickerson, Mary MacBride and Susan Black. Absent when the photo was taken were Scouts Bethany Baker and Alexis Getchell. Anyone wishing to help the C.A.N.C.E.R. organization can mail donations to P.O. Box 811, Presque Isle, Maine 04769. Troop members were introduced one at a time, wearing a flower necklace they each made, also in celebration of India’s holiday. Following the introductions, all attendees saluted the American flag, and then the troop members recited the Girl Scout Promise. The girls then took turns reciting each of the 10 Girl Scout Laws, and then sang a new song they recently learned to the tune “Jingle Bells” titled, “Girl Scout Cookies.”
Those in attendance then enjoyed a video montage created by Willie and Nancy Winslow. Photos of the girls over the past seven months participating in meetings, field trips and other troop activities were projected on a large screen set to familiar Girl Scout songs.
Each Scout went to the front, one by one, to make her individual India presentation. All of the girls were assigned a research topic and made their original presentation during the troop’s Thinking Day celebration in February. The girls and their families researched India’s cuisine, crops, tourist attractions, games, religions, climate, language, holidays, currency, transportation and the country’s flag.
During the awards presentation, each Scout was given a small paper flag replicating the country of India which displayed the patches and petals each earned. One of the troop’s newest Daisies, Jenna Mountain, earned several of her 10 petals including: Courageous and Strong, Considerate and Caring, Responsible for What I Say and Do, Use Resources Wisely, Honest and Fair, Friendly and Helpful, Be a Sister to Every Girl Scout, and Respect Authority. New Daisies Sydney Robichaud and Alexus LaFerriere were unable to attend, but also earned several of their petals. All 10 Daisies earned their Girl Scout Health and Food Knowledge patch and Art Knowledge Patch. Brownie Katelyn Amero earned three Try-Its, two on her own, including Cookies Count, Dancercize and Sports and Games. Girls in the entire troop earned several patches for various events and activities including Christmas caroling, Fire Department Tour, Thinking Day 2010, Pizza Making, Planet Head Day, Girl Scout Sunday, Cookie Sales, and making donations to the Central Aroostook Humane Society. The Daisies received their blue membership star pin and the Brownies received their green membership star pin.
Three troop members were awarded top cookie seller patches. Amanda Winslow sold 206 boxes, Katelyn Amero sold 302 boxes and Madelyn Buzza sold 466 boxes. As a troop, the girls sold 1,896 boxes of cookies!
Several families received their Family Star patch, two were first-time recipients. Jenna Mountain and her mother, Debbie Olah, were honored; Jenna received a patch and her mother was given a certificate of appreciation. Unable to attend, but also earning her Family Star patch was first-time Daisy Scout Sydney Robichaud, and her mother, Jennifer Robichaud. Girls receiving a Silver Star patch to supplement the Family Star patch earned last year were Delaney Alward, Katelyn Amero, Madelyn Buzza and Amanda Winslow. Mothers Wendy Maple, Laurie Amero, Jennifer Buzza and Nancy Winslow all received certificates of appreciation.
This troop is very fortunate to have so many dedicated mothers, many of whom are registered volunteers. To thank them for their support, each of the girls presented their mothers with a magnet that read, “Volunteers have ordinary hands and extraordinary hearts.” Mothers honored were Laura Trask, Laurie Amero, Angela Rider, Tammy Getchell, Laura Baker, Wendy Maple, Debbie Olah, Nancy Winslow and Jennifer Buzza. Mothers Daveena Waugh and Jennifer Robichaud will be presented their gifts of appreciation at the next troop meeting.
To conclude the ceremony, the girls sang one final, well-known Girl Scout song, titled “Make New Friends.” Families and friends were all invited downstairs after the ceremony to enjoy a piece of cake.
