Women’s group aiding Perham family

The Perham Ladies Group has recently taken on a project relating to a need in their community. Several weeks ago, a press release from NMCC was published in the Star-Herald concerning some students building and installing steps at the home of Kathy Williams in Perham. Williams is disabled and handicapped, needing the use of a walker to get around, and the new steps allowed her to leave her home without falling down.

The Williams family moved to Perham approximately four years ago from Rhode Island and Mr. Williams had some major medical problems, passing away in 2008 after several years of illness. It was during this time that the town of Perham reevaluated the tax base, increasing the tax bill on the Williams property and the family fell behind on their tax obligation.
In a “Letter to the Editor”, the Star-Herald published a plea from Mrs. Williams, asking for a “Christmas Miracle”. She was notified that the town of Perham was foreclosing on her home, and she needed help. She felt that she had worked as much as possible with the Perham town officials, and didn’t know where else to turn to for assistance.
The problem came to the attention of the Perham Ladies Group and they are working to assist the family by collecting donations door-to-door throughout Perham. The time frame that the community and the ladies group have is quite short, with a deadline for payment due to the Town office being Monday, Jan. 25. Mrs. Williams received a letter from the town of Perham stating that foreclosure will go into effect on Tuesday, Jan. 26 and that no less than the total amount of $2,200 due will be accepted.
It is hoped that the Perham Ladies group will be able to collect the full amount through their collective efforts. As of Jan. 13, they had garnered $724 and that includes some precious nickels donated by some children who opened their piggy banks.
For those who may be interested in contributing to the Williams family plight, they may mail any donations to Perham Ladies Group in care of Deb Viola at 134 Nutting Road, Perham ME 04766. Please make any checks out to both Perham Ladies and Kathy Williams. Treasurer Ellie Snyder Jordan will send donors a receipt for their contribution.
Members of the Perham Ladies Group will also be willing to go to donor’s homes to pick up the donation, or they can be made directly to the Viola or Snyder/Jordan homes.
Those having any questions may contact Deb Viola at 498-3433 or Ellie Snyder Jordan at 455-8016 or e-mail Deb Viola at nuttingroad@yahoo.com.
