To the editor:
It is a tough world for animals without homes today. Cats even more so than dogs are filling shelters by the hundreds. Recently a young family whose wage earner became another jobless statistic of the recession, had to move into public housing, which meant leaving behind several young cats, or face eviction. This man is also a Veteran, and in support of his service I became a foster parent to several kitties, for what I hoped would be a short temporary period.
Shelters had already been contacted, so I went to work e-mailing and posting and talking with citizens and veterinarians … to no avail. Then a ‘Diamond in the Rough’ was found. Norma Milton and Halfway Home Pet Rescue (www.halfwayhomepetrescue.org) serving Aroostook County!
In less than a day Norma was working on solutions to my kitty situation that is overwhelming for me, and my dogs. These animals will have to go through leukemia testing and spaying or neutering, then be available for adoption. Some may even make it to the Feline Adoption Fair in Caribou on Saturday, Jan. 23.
Funding is always a big deal and people may donate money to help with veterinary fees by writing a check to Presque Isle Animal Hospital and sending it to Halfway Home Pet Rescue, PO Box 488, Caribou, ME 04736. That money will be used solely for this Veteran’s animals’ medical needs. He has served his country. Can we at least help his pets. FMI: Norma Milton 492-1722 or miltion@mfx.net
I would personally like to thank Norma (who was by the way, an Animal Planet Volunteer of the Year nominee in 2007) for all of her community service and advocacy for animals. Also thank you to the volunteers who help the Rescue and people who offer foster homes. Great job!
