MARS HILL — The Mars Hill Utility District has received a Safety Enhancement Grant awarded by the Maine Municipal Association for just over $1,601.

The money will be used to enhance the district’s safety efforts.
“The Safety Enhancement Grant and Scholarship Grant programs offer financial incentives to members of the Maine Municipal Association Workers’ Compensation Fund. Safety Enhancement Grants are used to purchase safety equipment or services that assist in reducing the frequency and severity of workplace injuries,” said Bob Lento, superintendent of the MHUD.
The MMA has been awarding safety grants to members of its Workers’ Compensation Fund since 1999. The grant program has assisted municipalities by bestowing $1.89 million through funding of 1,506 Safety Enhancement Grants and 320 Scholarship Grants.
Ed MacDonald, loss control manager for the MMA, said nearly 100 applications were received and thousands given out through the program.
“The program received 90 applications for this grant period. Approximately $80,398 were awarded following review of all applications,” said McDonald. “Grants are awarded in May and October each year.”
