UMPI Owl basketball teams remain winless

Owls still looking for first win
    The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s basketball team was defeated by the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy, 66-63, in a game played Sunday at Wieden Gymnasium.

    The Owls led by three points with two minutes to go, but were unable to take advantage of key opportunities down the stretch. With the loss, the Owls fall to 0-6 on the year.
    UMPI had four players in double-figure scoring, yet were plagued by turnovers with 24. UMPI was led by Ray Mitchell, who had 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field. Mitchell also grabbed eight rebounds in the contest.  Kyle Corrigan connected for 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the floor, including 2-or-2 on three-pointers. He also finished with three assists and two steals, while teammate Chris Coffin added 11 points and game-high nine rebounds.  Junior guard Devon Peaslee chipped in with 10 points and dished out five assists in the losing effort.
    Sam Bell of MMA, which improved to 3-6, led his Mariner team with 18 points, while Jared Sternbergh finished with 11 from the field.  MMA commanded the 37-32 halftime lead; the Owls battled back and held the 3 point advantage with 2 minutes left in regulation, but were unable to take advantage of key opportunities in the closing minutes of play.
    On Thursday, the Owls were throttled by Div. 1 University of Maine, 133-58, in a game played at Alfond Arena in Orono. Corrigan’s 20 points were tops for UMPI. He was 5 for 7 from behind the three-point line. Mitchell had nine rebounds and five assists.
Lady Owls lose to Colby, MMA
    PRESQUE ISLE – UMPI junior guard Megan Korhonen had a game-high 17 points, including 8-for-9 shooting from the foul-line, and added five rebound and three assists, the Owls fell 73-46 to Colby College at home in Wieden Gymnasium Saturday. With the loss, the Owls fell to 0-6 on the season.
    Freshman guard Emily Pelletier set a career and season-high of 14 points for the Owls, while senior captain Mindy Sullivan grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and added seven points.
    Colby’s Aarika Ritchie had a team-high 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting and added three steals in leading her team. Jill Vaughan came off the bench and added 13 points and five rebounds for the Mules, who led 39-27 at halftime.
    Despite a solid first-half shooting effort, the Mules held UMPI to just 20 percent (6-for-30) shooting in the second half. The Owls had a season-best effort from the line, shooting 72 percent from the charity stripe. However, the squad struggled with turnovers and were also out-rebounded, 42-34.
    UMPI lost by a 49-36 score in its home opener last Tuesday.  The Owls were led by senior Kathy Kilfoil with 10 points. Korhonen added eight points, while Pelletier chipped in with seven points, going 4-4 from the line and also dishing out three assists. The Owls struggled in the turnover department with 27, as they were also out-rebounded, 34-26.
    Amethyst Cousins had a game-high 17 points for the Mariners, who improved their record to 2-3.
    “Even though the team is 0-6 at this point in the season, I am pleased with how far we’ve come since October,” commented coach Tracy Guerrette. “My team is full of potential, and I have full confidence and belief that we will be ready to go for Sunrise Conference play.”
    The Owls return to action Jan. 2 and 3 as they head to the University of Southern Maine Husky Invitational Tournament in Gorham. The Owls will take on host USM Jan. 2 for a 4:30 p.m. game.
Hews gains special honor
    PRESQUE ISLE – Senior soccer captain and Physical Education major Trevor Hews has been named as one of two students in the state of Maine to be the “Outstanding Future Professional.”  Students worthy of the award are evaluated on academic performance, professional involvement, involvement in campus and community projects and on leadership qualities. Not only has Hews succeeded as a leader on the soccer field, but also in the classroom and among his peers on campus.
    Hews was one of two students nominated by the physical education faculty here at UMPI to compete for the award; each university that has health, physical education, recreation and/or athletic training is able to nominate two students a year for this award. A panel of professional from MAHPERD evaluated all the state of Maine applicants and Hews was then chosen as the recipient of the award. 
    He will now represent MAHPRED and the state at the Eastern District conference set to held in Rye, N.Y. in February. Along with receiving his honors, his name will be put forward as a candidate to become the Outstanding Future Professional in the Eastern District. Two winners from the Eastern District will then be chosen to attend the National PE Conference (AAHPERD) In Indianapolis, Ind. in March, 2010. 
    Hews is from Van Buren and is set to graduate in spring of 2010. He will be doing his PE student-teaching throughout the spring semester. Hews is the second student from UMPI to gain the honor.
