Mars Hill’s a festive place this holiday season

Christmas specials
    The East Ridge Union Church will be presenting a Christmas musical featuring a variety of Christmas specials on Sunday, Dec. 13, at 3 p.m. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow.

    The CAHS Junior Senior High School Holiday Concert will be presented on Thursday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. at the high school. The Winterfest Committee will hold their annual cookie sale during the event.
    Fort Street Elementary School will hold their annual Holiday Concert on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. at the high school. The Winterfest Committee will hold their annual cookie sale during the event.
    Bridgewater Free Baptist Church will be doing a Live Nativity Scene on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 21, 22 and 23 from 6 – 9 p.m. They will also be doing a Candlelight Service on Christmas Eve at 7 p.m.
    The United Baptist Church in Mars Hill will be presenting a Cantata “The Love of God at Christmas” on Sunday, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m. A time of fellowship and refreshment will follow. They will also be doing a Candlelight Service on Christmas Eve at 6 p.m.
    The First Free Baptist Church in Blaine will be presenting a Cantata “Star of Wonder” during the morning worship service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20.
Light Up the Town
    The annual Light Up The Town Contest, held for large and small businesses in Mars Hill, will be judged this year on Tuesday evening, Dec. 8. Winners receive a special prize as well as bragging rights for the year. Be sure to get out and enjoy all the decorations that help make the season bright!
CNA training
    Are you looking for a rewarding career opportunity? The Aroostook Medical Center and SAD 42 are offering a certified nursing assistant (CNA) training course that will prepare participants to work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals and nursing homes. CNAs provide hands-on care which can include taking a patient’s blood pressure, helping with personal hygiene, assisting with feeding and much more. 
    The application deadline is Dec. 4, with the course beginning Jan. 4, 2010, at the Aroostook Health Center in Mars Hill. Tuition is $425 plus a $75 application fee. For more information or to obtain an application, please call Kathy Miller at SAD 42 at 425-3771. 
Rotary Club
    The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center.  
    The special speaker was Rotarian Roger Shaw. He spoke about some meetings that he has attended with the State Education Department. He presented several ideas to the department for their consideration and discussion as they consider ways to make school consolidation a solution rather than a hardship for schools in rural Maine. He also is meeting with several area schools on ways to reduce spending.
    The 2010 Birthday Calendars have arrived. For anyone wishing to purchase one, they are available at various locations in town. Cost is $6 per calendar. For any corrections, changes or additions to the calendar, contact Tomi Henderson at 429-9126 or at tomihen@yahoo.com.
Special fund-raiser
    There will be a Family Photo Day at CAHS on Sunday, Dec. 6, from  9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Four photographers will be taking part in this: Natasha Brewer, Samantha Marie Photography, Barb Halvorson and Emily Rooney. Sessions are scheduled by appointment only. Call Laura at 227-7693 to set up your 15-minute session. All pictures will be given to the family on a CD for $25.
    All monies received from this fund-raiser will go to Bobbi’s Build An Ear Fund. Bobbi Jo is the three-year-old daughter of Jamie and Ryan Guerrette. She was born with bilateral microtia with atresia (without ears). Her family is raising funds to have reconstructive surgery in California, which would allow her to have ears, eardrums and ear canals.
Student of the Month
     Central Aroostook High School’s October Student of the Month is Zachary McClung. Zachary is a busy fella and wasn’t available to have his picture taken in time for last week’s column.
Karaoke
    The Mars Hill American Legion Hall is offering Karaoke each Friday night from 7 – 10. Admission is $3 per person. With emcees Dennis and Celia Maurice, this promises to be a fun thing to do on Fridays. Those under age 17 must be accompanied by an adult.
    Singers are to bring their own songs. Prizes will be awarded each Friday for the best performers.

    KARAOKE — Linda Gaudino sang “Dream” on Friday, Nov. 13, at the Mars Hill American Legion. There will be Karaoke each Friday night through the winter.
