IN THE CITY

Happy Holidays everyone! With election time come and gone, now is the time to think of loved ones and special individuals during this holiday season. This includes your pets. For some of us, they are part of our family and have Christmas stockings ready to be filled.

Why not include their dog license for 2010? They are now available for anyone to purchase. All dogs 6 months old and older need to be licensed by January 31st of each year. The fee for dogs that have not been altered is $11 and the fee for dogs that have been spayed or neutered is $6. Proof of rabies is required before a license can be issued. For new licenses, proof of neutered or spayed certificate must be provided. There is a $15 late fee, per dog, for any owner that applies after January 31st.
A new law was implemented in 2007 (Maine Revised Statutes – Title 7, §3916 Chapter 2-A Notice to department) stating that a veterinarian who issues a certificate of rabies vaccination for a dog pursuant to subsection 2 shall, within 30 days of issuing the certificate, forward by mail, e-mail or fax a copy of that certificate to the department. The department shall send a copy of the certificate by mail, e-mail or fax to the clerk of the municipality in which the owner resides.
Once the municipality receives a copy of the certificate it is forwarded to the Animal Control Officer. He then follows up with dog owners in order to have them come to City Hall to license their dog(s).
Now that we took care of the pooches, how about purchasing a fishing, hunting, or fishing/hunting combination for the “difficult-to-buy-for” person or sportsman or sportswoman in your life. The 2010 licenses are now available for purchase. Even if that person lives elsewhere within the state of Maine, and have purchased a license in the past, you have the ability to purchase their license here.
And lastly, for those of you with unpaid real estate taxes or personal property taxes, now is the time to come in. You have until December 31st to pay your taxes in full; otherwise your name will appear in the 2009 Annual Report.
I wish you all good health and happiness during the holiday season and in the coming New Year.
