The special speakers were Terry Burtchell and her husband, Steve. They have a shop in the Aroostook Centre Mall called The Seamstress. Terry has been sewing since she was very young, learning from her mom and both grandmothers. She also credits her home ec teacher, Mrs. Bubar, with teaching her couture sewing.
She was 17 when she was paid to make blouses and has sewn both her own clothes as well as clothes for her three daughters. In 1995, she was hired by Panscofar’s Bridal Shop to manage the alteration department. In 2007, the alteration department became a separate business owned and operated by Burtchell, and in 2009 she relocated to her current location in the Aroostook Centre Mall. She currently employs four part-time seamstresses.
Her services include custom bridal gowns, bridal consultation, gown preservation, tailoring, zipper replacement, hems, tux measurements, pressing and more. She believes that listening to her customers allows her to meet their needs. She also does sewing machine repair, with the help of her husband, Steve. She knew that if he could take a tractor apart and put it back together, that working on sewing machines would be a snap for him. He also helps with some of the hemming in the shop.
Her hours are: Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and evenings by appointment. She is closed on Sunday. Her Visit her Web site at: www.seamstressterryburtchell.com.
