Job Corps Color Guard visits Pack 187

Cub Scouts
The Easton Cub Scout Pack 187 had the opportunity to have the Loring Job Corps Color Guard in attendance at their Oct. 8 meeting. The membership of the Color Guard led our Scouts in flag folding, rifle techniques, drill commands and a small competition involving the Scouts’ memory of skills that were taught. They also learned that being assigned to the Color Guard is considered an honor due to the fact that these individuals present and carry the symbols of their unit and country. Each Scout was able to spend one-on-one time with a member of the Color Guard to entertain questions. The Scouts thank the Loring Corps Color Guard members for their time and professionalism, as well as the service they provide to our communities.

Senior citizens
On Oct. 8, 31 Easton senior citizens, including the bus driver, Dellas Adams, his wife, Carol, and mother, Margaret Adams, from Presque Isle, enjoyed a leaf-peeping trip by school bus to St. Agatha. Upon arrival ,the group had their noon-time meal at the Lake View Restaurant. On the return home they stopped at the camp of Cheryl and Kirk Thibeau for a tour of their beautiful summer home. The trip up was a little cloudy, but coming back in the afternoon was very nice.

United Methodist Women
The Easton United Methodist Women held their October meeting at the home of their president, Eldora Carter, with five attending. Devotions were held by Eldora in the absence of Dottie Beaton. The word for the month was “goodness,” followed by the reading of the UMW Purpose. The secretary’s report was read from the president’s notes in the absence of the Secretary Marjorie Corey. Treasurer Marie Hewitt read her report, and both were accepted as read. The quilt chairman, Freida Dionne, reported that there were four baby quilts left for sale, also a large one, and a queen-sized one. The group made 12 visitations this month.  5 Star Giving Award was received from Northern District President Candy Richards. Under new business: a membership form was filled out, with 15 members as of Jan. 1, 2009; one member was  added, Lindy Fowler; one removed by death, Hilda Langley; and eight members no longer able to be active included Lillian Flewelling, Mona Adams, Avis Hume, Carol Higley, Erma Thompson, Dottie Beaton, Viola Flewelling and Marjorie Corey, leaving nine active members. There was discussion of ways the church could do outreach work, something like a coffee shop or just a place where men could chat and enjoy fellowship together. This was just a floated idea. It was decided that the group should make more of an effort to visit the shut-in members which was agreed to be done. They were also reminded that Olive Bolster has a birthday coming up. Olive lives in Portland. The group felt bad that they were going to lose one of their faithful members, Dottie Beaton, as the Beatons are moving to Houlton the 1st of November. Dottie was also the church’s piano player and they are now looking for another without much success. The meeting was adjourned followed by pumpkin pie and ice cream and lots of fellowship. Rollie Dionne and Clair Carter returned from a long drive and joined those left — Freda, Marie and Eldora — for dessert.

Seniors’ club meets
The Easton Happy Days Senior Citizens’ Club held their Oct. 23rd meeting at the West Ridge Rd. manor rec room with 14 members present and one guest. After a generous and delicious potluck dinner, Brenda Barker from the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging spoke to the group about the 2009 Medicare Savings Program. This is a special state program that could help save over $96 per month or more on your Medicare Part B premium. She handed out pamphlets with good information or they could call the Agency at 877-353-3771 or drop in to visit with them. She told them that eligibility depended on their monthly income limit for singles ($1,745) and for couples ($2,347). The money you save in savings accounts or in the value of the things you own are not counted in these programs.
After Brenda left, the president, Marie Hewitt, called the meeting to order with the salute to the flag and the singing of “My Country Tis of Thee,” with Rogena Thomas at the piano. Treasurer Ida Doak called the roll call, with Marie Hewitt, Edith Fuller, Eldora Carter, Rena Richardson, Arlene Ladner, Ailene Embelton, JoAnn Johnson, Glenice Craig, Margery Niblett, Nina Trask, Ezalee Smith, Lindy Fowler, Rogena Thomas and Ida Doak present. She also reported that she had written checks to cover the cost of the leaf-peeping trip to St Agatha and the dinners. Some money was left over which she put back in the bank, along with $30 given anonymously. She reported the balance and the report was accepted as read. The secretary’s report was also accepted as read.
The president read a notice from the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging about their annual meeting on Oct. 26 at the Shriner’s Building. There they will explain more about the Maine Senior Action Network, the 2010 Medicare drug plans, saving energy costs and about beniefits that put money in your pocket. There will be no meeting in November or December for the Happy Days Club, as these two months are so busy. The seniors will be served special Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at the elementary school cafeteria in those months. Also, the president will be visiting with her daughter, Mary Ellen, in Florida through most of that time. Everyone was reminded to get out to vote on Nov. 3, and there was some discussion on the items on the ballot. It was moved and seconded to adjourn. Some stayed to play games.

Visits
Olivia and Chris Smith were home last weekend visiting with Mammy and Grampy Smith, (Vance and Debbie). It’s always a special treat to have them come and get spoiled. They grow up way too fast not to. They also visited with many other family members.

Lady Bears win
On Oct. 27, the Easton Bears’ den was rocking with excitement as the girls’ soccer team got ready to go and play Bangor Christian in Bangor. They had a great send-off, with lots of adults and students attending a pep rally. Mr. Keenan, our superintendent, spoke to the girls and encouraged them to listen to their coach and play their best. He also told them not to be intimidated by the other team. He said that Easton was behind them 100 percent. They are the first team to go to the playoffs in 22 years. Good job, girls. No, great job, girls! We are very proud of you.
Mr. Shaw spoke to them of how proud he was of them and their coach, Rachael. The band played some songs to get the fans pumped and they did succeed. Cody Tompkins got everyone revved up with the school cheer, “Give me an ‘E’” and so on. Luke Budreau showed his poem-writing ability by reading a poem to the Lady Bears that he had composed. He also made up a rap that the teachers and staff did. The poem goes like this:

Today we celebrate something very special
Something spectacular and not one bit dull
Today our school stands strong and proud
We’re here to cheer for our girls long and loud.
They started this year’s soccer season with a “goal” in mind
And after scoring many, they proved they’re one of a kind
So onward they go into uncharted land
They prepare for the game, where they’ll take a stand
Our boys tried and had a good run
But it’s time for our girls to play and have fun.
They’ll pass the ball and they’ll shoot it and, of course, score
Like a bird learning to fly, they will take a leap and soar.
Girls, I hope you know you’re not alone on that field
You have the support of us all that will never yield
So go out and take the field, with hearts full of pride
We’ll be there to see you win, Easton’s on your side.

Then the staff did their rap and it was cute. They are loyal fans. There were lots of cheers and good-luck wishes as the bus departed for Bangor. They won over Bangor Christian 2-1. We knew that you could do it, ladies. Carla Halverson scored the first goal and Megan Frank put in the second one to win the game. Everyone played a great game and we are so proud of our Lady Bears!
