Fall Extravaganza planned at Mapleton Elementary School

Parents and staff from Mapleton Elementary School have met and there are several exciting events coming up on the school calendar! The annual “Pumpkins, Poems and Scarecrows Extravaganza” is always a much-anticipated event. Students and their families are asked to create a pumpkin, poem, scarecrow, or any combination of the three that promotes the importance of reading.  The goal is to have fun as a family while demonstrating support for reading and showing some creativity! Certificates will be given to all participants and several prizes will be awarded based on a random drawing from the names of those who participate.
Creations can be brought to the school Tuesday, Oct. 13 between 6:30-7:30 p.m. Apple cider and cookies will be served for those who attend. If families are unable to attend on the 13th, creations can also be dropped off at the school during regular school hours Wednesday, Oct. 14. All entries should be accompanied by a display label including the name of the book, student and/or family name and grade. Have children select their favorite book and get crafty!

Family Movie Night
The Mapleton Parent Organization will be hosting a family movie night scheduled for Friday, Oct. 30. Students of Mapleton Elementary School and their families are invited to attend this evening full of fun and some surprises! Plans are still under way, so watch for more information (including the movie that will be shown) in this column and in your child’s backpack in the coming weeks! Mark your calendars for an evening out with the family!
Hannaford Shoppers
Do you shop at Hannaford stores? Have you noticed an area in the store where you can drop off your receipts to earn cash for local schools? The process is very simple. All you need to do is drop off your receipt in the box at the front of the store designated to the school of your choice. Hannaford employees sort through the receipts, note qualifying purchases and send checks directly to the corresponding school to use at the school’s discretion based on the point values of those purchases. Donating to the education of our young people couldn’t get any easier than that! Receipts could also be sent to the school and volunteers will make sure they are delivered to the nearest Hannaford store. The faculty thanks you for your support!
Fall Fund-raiser
Girl Scouts all over Maine are currently involved in a fall fund-raiser. No, it’s not cookie time … that will take place in January! Did you know that Girl Scouts also sell magazine subscriptions, CDs, books, and nuts? This product sale is not as well known as the cookie sale, but is still important for troops to earn much-needed funds for troop supplies and activities. If you would like to order a new magazine subscription, or renew a current subscription, would you consider contacting a local Girl Scout? Besides earning funds for their troop, girls can also work toward individual goals to earn patches for their uniforms, as well as incentive prizes. Girls are also taking orders for cans of nuts, plain and flavored, some of which are sold in decorative tins. If you would like to support your local Girl Scouts by placing an order, you are encouraged to do so! There are currently two Girl Scout troops in Mapleton. The Daisy/Brownie troop is led by Jennifer Buzza and Nancy Winslow. The Junior troop is led by Eva Shay. Contact any of those leaders to place an order! Orders are being taken now through Oct. 9. Your support will be greatly appreciated!
Castle Hill Grange Hall Preservation Society
The Castle Hill Grange Hall Preservation Society held its monthly meeting Sept. 22. It was noted that the leak in the roof has been repaired and the ceiling tiles were replaced in the hallway. A small kitchenette has been installed in the front of the hall that will be a welcome addition for future functions. The public is reminded that the Grange Hall is available for rent May 1-Nov. 1. Please contact any member if you are interested in renting the hall for your event.
Society members will be selling VIP tickets for the Aroostook Centre Mall again this year. Tickets will be $3 and shopping will take place Sunday, Nov. 15. Special sales will be held throughout the mall. Please see any member to purchase your tickets. All profits will benefit the Society.
The next meeting has been scheduled for Oct. 27 with the board of directors meeting at 6:30 p.m. and the regular meeting to follow.
Mapleton United Methodist Church Luncheon
The United Methodist Church luncheon will be held Friday, Oct. 9 at 11:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend.
