Moose “invade” Washburn
Dan Martin and Pete Koch of the Washburn Food Mart have been very busy the past week cutting and wrapping over a dozen moose caught during the first week of the season from Monday, Sept. 28, through Saturday, Oct. 3.

Dan keeps a close check on the hunters and is getting good feedback, with most of the clients citing that they were referred by other hunters, with hopes that the second season will bring more to Washburn.
The moose are averaging 800 pounds and up, with the record-holding one weighing in at 1,009 pounds! The sizes are larger than previous years. The men are looking forward to a short break in their duties until the second week of the season from Monday, Oct. 12, through Saturday, Oct. 17.

Soup Kitchen update
The volunteers and Board of Directors for the Washburn Soup Kitchen are actively looking for and waiting to hear from anyone who may have a building they could use either for a kitchen or a smaller area to put up food boxes. With winter approaching, the need for the Kitchen’s services will be even greater, and patrons of the Kitchen who depend on the goods and commodities of it will be in need of assistance from other sources.
The Kitchen will close on Saturday, Oct. 31, if a building isn’t found, and a valuable and needed service to the tri-community area will be lost.
The non-profit agency has been a valuable and needed service to the tri-community area and, with winter approaching, the need will be even greater.
