On Saturday, Aug. 29, the McHatten family held its reunion at the Castle Hill Grange Hall. Over 100 McHattens and friends met for their first reunion since 1992. Roxann (McHatten) Gura of Plantsville, Conn. was planner and organizer of the event. There were pictures and memorabilia dating back to the 1800s. Rowell (Rocky) McHatten dressed in period clothing to represent his great-grandfather, Robert Alexander McHatten, who lived from 1854-1904.
Items raffled during the celebration included a flag flown over the White House in honor of the event and a proclamation by Gov. John E. Baldacci commemorating the day, along with ancestral pictures. T-shirts, balloons, games for the kids, and a potluck meal with hot dogs and hamburgers rounded out the day. Peter Parker and friends provided old time music that everyone enjoyed. Bob McHatten of Monticello served as photographer for the reunion.
Information was exchanged and updated on the family history and genealogy. The two oldest remaining McHattens are Robert McHatten, 94, of Castle Hill, and his sister, Maude (McHatten) Allodi, 89, of Sarasota, Fla. who were both presented with a birthday cake. Robert will be 95 in November, and Maude will turn 90 in April.
Robert McHatten was the oldest McHatten in attendance. The youngest was Gloria (McHatten) Dion, only a few weeks old. Other certificates were given out to commemorate several other milestones. Fourteen first cousins still remain from the family of Hebert and Asenath (Littlefield) McHatten. Thirteen of those were in attendance.
The family would like to thank Roxanne (McHatten) Gura and her husband, Jason, for all their hard work in planning this event and providing the family with precious family history. The family hopes there isn’t another 17 years before the next gathering!

Fall Fund-raiser
Girl Scouts all over Maine are currently involved in a fall fund-raiser. No, it’s not cookie time … that will take place in January! Did you know that Girl Scouts also sell magazine subscriptions, CDs, books, and nuts? This product sale is not as well known as the cookie sale, but is still important for troops to earn much-needed funds for troop supplies and activities. If you would like to order a new magazine subscription, or renew a current subscription, would you consider contacting a local Girl Scout? Besides earning funds for their troop, girls can also work toward individual goals to earn patches for their uniforms, as well as incentive prizes. Girls are also taking orders for cans of nuts, plain and flavored, some of which are sold in decorative tins. If you would like to support your local Girl Scouts by placing an order, you are encouraged to do so! There are currently two Girl Scout troops in Mapleton. The Daisy/Brownie troop is led by Jennifer Buzza and Nancy Winslow. The Junior troop is led by Eva Shay. Contact any of those leaders to place an order! Orders are being taken now through Oct. 9. Your support will be greatly appreciated!
Do you have news?
Lately it seems my “in box” has been lacking in regards to local news. Let’s change that! If you are involved in any group or organization that meets regularly, consider publicizing your group’s activities, fund-raisers, or minutes from your meetings. What about family gatherings, graduations, births, weddings, any special event that takes place in and out of the area? Don’t hesitate to submit your news! I have received feedback from many people connected to the Mapleton area that no longer live here, but are Star-Herald subscribers. They love reading about happenings from “home.” You may view your news as trivial, but others look forward to hearing what is taking place. Pictures are certainly welcome, too!
