HOULTON, Maine — Strains of “O Canada” filled the air and both Canadian and U.S. flags waved proudly, as about 40 people celebrated “Elbows Up! for Canada” at a rally in Houlton on July 5.
“It was wonderful,” said participant Dale Holden. “So many people driving by yelling ‘yay for Canada!'”
The theme “Elbows Up!” is a hockey term that has become a symbol of Canadian pride and determination.
The rally was part of a nationwide demonstration of support for Canadian business, culture and friendship, as similar gatherings were held all along the U.S.-Canada border.

“I think this was an important rally, showing Houlton is standing with the people of Canada, recognizing and appreciating their sovereignty,” said participant Susan McMann. “Canada is a solid, dependable ally and friend.”
Signs at the rally included “We are Friends, Neighbors, Family” and “Looking for Democracy? Canada is Just Down the Road.” Several people held “Bienvenue, Welcome” posters from the Visitor Center, many waved maple leaf flags, and a banner read “Houlton is Elbows Up with Canada! Proud to be Your Neighbors.” Chants and songs, including the Canadian national anthem, emphasized solidarity and unity.
Many people of Houlton have ties across the border, so the demonstration was particularly relevant. “For many years I have been a member of the Quaker Meeting in New Brunswick,” participant Marilyn Roper said, adding that she had told many about the rally. “The reaction was of great interest. All will receive a full report, to show how much they and Canada are respected and cherished.”
The Elbows Up! rally was organized by Restore, a group of area citizens concerned with issues of democracy, justice and economic, legal and local impacts of the Trump administration. The group is planning other events in the coming weeks.
