In a momentous milestone marking a century of historical preservation and community storytelling, the Fort Kent Historical Society has received an official sentiment from the 132nd Maine Legislature honoring its 100th anniversary.

The sentiment, jointly issued by the Maine Senate and House of Representatives, extends heartfelt congratulations and best wishes on behalf of the people of Maine.

The commendation was introduced by Sen. Sue Bernard of Caribou and cosponsored by Rep. Lucien Daigle of Fort Kent. It reads in part:

“Be it known to all that We, the Members of the Senate and House of Representatives, join in recognizing the Fort Kent Historical Society on the occasion of its 100th Anniversary. We extend our congratulations and best wishes…”

Signed by legislative leaders including President of the Senate Matthew E. Larsen Daughtry and Speaker of the House Ryan M. Fecteau, the sentiment underscores the society’s lasting impact on local culture and heritage.

Daigle formally presented the sentiment to the Fort Kent Historical Society Board, recognizing their commitment to preserving the region’s unique legacy and fostering community pride.

Since its founding in 1925, the Fort Kent Historical Society has worked tirelessly to preserve the stories, artifacts, and architecture that reflect the region’s Acadian and Franco-American heritage. Through restored buildings, historical exhibits, and educational outreach, the Society has become a cornerstone of community identity in the St. John Valley.

“This recognition is not just for the Society. It’s for every family, volunteer, and neighbor who has shared their story, donated an artifact, or supported our mission,” said Jim Thibodeau, Fort Kent Society president. “It’s a proud day for Fort Kent.”

To commemorate its 100th year, the society will host a special celebration later this summer featuring guided tours, guest speakers and local music.
