Caribou, Limestone’s West Gate Road set for more than two-month detour

A more than two-month detour along the West Gate Road in Caribou will go into effect on July 7 as crews work to replace a bridge, construction company McGillan Inc. announced on June 24.

The detour will be in effect until Sept. 30, covering the area of Greenlaw Brook No. 2 Bridge. The bridge is a quarter mile north of an intersection with Route 89 — also known as Access Highway — that serves as the typical connection between the state route and both Spud Speedway and the former Loring Air Force Base.

Posted signs will detour traffic from the Access Highway onto Madawaska Road, then onto Thompson Road before turning onto West Gate Road and vice versa for traffic heading the opposite direction.

The bridge replacement is a part of the Maine Statewide Transportation Improvement Program, a transportation capital improvement program that draws funding from the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration. This project carries a cost of nearly $2.4 million.
