Where to stay cool in Aroostook County today

As temperatures soar into the 80s and 90s in Aroostook County and throughout the state of Maine Tuesday, many local towns are opening cooling centers to help residents beat the heat.

These spaces offer air conditioning and a place for people to rest and hydrate to escape dangerous weather as high humidity combines with heat.

A heat advisory is in place for southeastern Aroostook, where the heat index — or “feels like” temperature — is forecast to reach a high of 100 in Houlton, according to the National Weather Service’s Caribou Office. In Presque Isle and Caribou, the heat index could climb as high as 95.
