Victim identified in fatal Caribou fire

The Maine state fire marshal’s office has preliminarily identified the victim in a fatal fire that happened in Caribou Saturday night.

Fire marshals believe Tony Jackson, 49, to be the person found dead after the structure fire at 32 Hillcrest Ave. in Caribou.

The person’s remains were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for positive identification and examination, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.

The Caribou Fire Department responded to the fire shortly after 10:30 p.m. Saturday, where firefighters discovered a body upon entering the building. Crews battled the fire for several hours. The Presque Isle and Limestone fire departments provided mutual aid.

The fire marshal’s office is still investigating the cause of the fire.
