A Fort Fairfield man is dead after his snowmobile veered off a trail last Wednesday, Jan. 22 and crashed into nearby trees.
Michael Dewey, 53, was reported missing Wednesday night. Game wardens found his body early the next morning on a Presque Isle trail, Mark Latti, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, said Tuesday.
Dewey had gone snowmobiling alone at around 1:30 p.m. on his 2023 Bombardier Renegade Enduro, Latti said. When he hadn’t come home that night, his family called 911.
Game wardens were alerted at approximately 10:30 p.m. and started searching local trails. At around 12:15 a.m. on Jan. 23, they found Dewey’s body just off the Aroostook Valley trail, near the Parkhurst Siding Road in Presque Isle, Latti said.
Initial reports indicate that Dewey was traveling south and missed a turn. He went off the trail, struck several trees and was thrown from the sled.
He was wearing a helmet, Latti said. Speed appeared to be a factor in the crash.
No further information was immediately available.
