BANGOR, Maine – The Maine Rural Water Association presented the Outstanding Wastewater Operations award to the Caribou Utilities District at their 44th Annual Conference, held from December 10-12 at the Cross Insurance Center.

This award recognizes an organization that demonstrates excellence in wastewater management, ensuring both efficiency and sustainability in their operations. Caribou Utilities District has shown exceptional commitment through a variety of innovative and proactive approaches.

Caribou Utilities District Preventative Maintenance Programs are a model for best practices in the industry. From their annual sewer main cleaning program, which ensures 100 percent of cleanable lines are thoroughly cleaned, to their maintenance of lift and pump stations, they are minimizing blockages and extending the life of critical infrastructure. Their digital maintenance schedule and digital records further streamline operations and ensure no task is overlooked. The proactive approach they take, such as conducting CCTV inspections to prevent inflow and infiltration, keeps their system running smoothly and reliably.

Notably, the Grimes Wastewater treatment facility upgrade, completed between 2020 and 2022, showcases their dedication to improving treatment processes and enhancing system efficiency. The work they’ve done, including dewatering, upgrading infrastructure, and expanding storage capacity, has made a significant positive impact on their operations.

Caribou Utilities District continues to prioritize sustainability and improvement with upcoming projects such as the rehabilitation of several lift stations, pump stations, and the replacement of the generator at the Grimes wastewater treatment facility.

Beyond technical excellence, Caribou Utilities District has also demonstrated a strong commitment to safety, training, and collaboration. Their safety program ensures a safe working environment, while their willingness to collaborate with neighboring utilities highlights their dedication to regional resilience.

“We are honored to receive the Outstanding Operations in Wastewater award from the Maine Rural Water Association. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team. Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our innovative and proactive approaches, which ensure both efficiency and sustainability in our operations,” said Jonathan Helstrom, general manager.

“Looking ahead, we are dedicated to ongoing improvement. Our upcoming projects will not only enhance our capabilities but also ensure we continue to deliver exceptional service and uphold our commitment to protecting the environment,”  Helstrom said.

“I am pleased to be a part of this successful crew; we owe many credits to those that came before us and paved the path and continue to be a knowledge base that we can rely on. Moving forward our team is committed to working toward the same level of excellence and developing skills to better the community and District,” said Derek Dufour, wastewater superintendent.
