Blanket donations help keep Jefferson Cary Cancer Center patients warm

CARIBOU, Maine — The Christmas Season always demonstrates the kindness and generosity of people. Such was the case at Cary Medical Center when the wife of a patient treated at the Jefferson Cary Cancer Center brought six hand-made blankets for patients receiving chemotherapy treatment. In addition to the blankets a donation was also made to the Brian’s Ride Cancer Fund. The donations were made by Elaine Michaud.

She explained that when her husband was receiving his chemotherapy treatments he would become so chilly. She said that she began to knit while sitting at his bedside for countless hours and the blankets brought her husband such warmth and comfort during his long days of treatment. She decided that she wanted to share her craft with other patients in hopes that they would provide the same comfort for them.

Kacey Soucy, RN and nurse manager of the Jefferson Cary Cancer Center said that the blankets were so much appreciated.

“Going through chemotherapy treatment is never an easy thing for anyone,” said Soucy whose mother lost her life to cancer. “Elaine’s husband demonstrated so much courage during his treatment and Elaine was right by his side. How generous of her it was to provide these six wonderful blankets. They will mean so much to our patients.”

Soucy went on to praise other community members who have donated items and funds to the Brian’s Ride Cancer Fund.  The fund has raised more than $200,000 and provides support for patients when they are going through cancer treatment.

“We would like to thank all the members of our community who donate items and funds to our patients throughout the year,” she said.  “Our team in the Cancer Center does all we can to make our patients feel like part of our family and the kindness and generosity of the community adds a special touch, especially during the Christmas season.”

Donations to the Brian’s Ride Cancer Fund can be made through the Cary Medical Center website.
