HOULTON, Maine – Budding artists with the Boys and Girls Club of Maliseets program will have more opportunities to get creative with canvases thanks to a Maine Community Foundation grant.

The Club program recently learned it had been chosen for a $5,000 grant to expand art programs for club participants, according to Kayla Shrout, unit director for the Boys and Girls Club of Maliseets. The grant was part of the 2024 Maine Expansion Arts.

“The youth will benefit from having an art program because it gives them the opportunity to expand their knowledge on art, as well as gain self-confidence,” Shrout said. “We are also helping to build local Indigenous artists through this program.”

The Club plans to bring in local native artists to teach classes to the youth. There are roughly 40 youth enrolled in the Boys and Girls Club of Maliseets, which includes both native and non-native students.
