HOULTON, Maine — Momentum Aroostook celebrated the accomplishments of 15 outstanding leaders at its annual Aroostook Achievers Banquet on Thursday, November 7, recognizing individuals in categories spanning Agriculture & Natural Resources, Business & Leadership Development, Education, Health & Wellness, and Local Government & Civic Leadership. Among the honorees were Josh McLaughlin and Johanna Johnston, both recognized in the Local Government & Civic Leadership category for their unwavering dedication to community advancement and economic growth in Aroostook County.

McLaughlin, owner of J. McLaughlin Construction, was celebrated for his exceptional leadership and philanthropic contributions. His extensive community involvement includes serving as board chair at Houlton Water Company, board president at Southern Aroostook Development Corporation and vice president of the Rotary Club of Houlton.

One of McLaughlin’s most impactful initiatives is his role as a key leader in the Future Professionals of Aroostook program, now entering its second year. This program aims to inspire and guide the region’s youth toward fulfilling careers while instilling key life skills. Guardians, guidance counselors and teachers alike have noted the positive effect the program has had on its participants, fostering confidence, leadership skills and a clearer vision for their futures.

“I am incredibly honored to receive this recognition from Momentum Aroostook,” McLaughlin said. “This award is a testament to the power of community collaboration in making Aroostook County a better place for everyone, and I’m especially proud of the work we’re doing with Future Professionals of Aroostook to help shape the next generation of leaders.”

Johnston, executive director of the Southern Aroostook Development Corporation, was acknowledged for her multifaceted contributions to Southern Aroostook. Her leadership has been pivotal in fostering sustainable economic growth and supporting local businesses. Beyond her professional achievements, Johnston’s passion for animals and community involvement shines through in her initiatives.

Her dedication inspired the creation of the bachelor fundraising calendar, Dudes and Adoptables, a project benefiting the Houlton Humane Society, which highlighted local bachelors while raising crucial funds for animal welfare. “I’ve always believed that our connection to animals brings out the best in us,” Johnston said. “This calendar was a fun way to give back to the Humane Society and ensure every animal finds a loving home.”

Johnston is also deeply involved in organizing community events that celebrate diversity and unity. Notably, she played a key role in the International Food Festival, which raised over $4,000 for Rotary International projects. The event not only provided financial support for vital initiatives but also fostered awareness and appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures within Aroostook County.

“It’s truly humbling to be recognized alongside Josh and to see our community’s efforts celebrated,” Johnston shared. “Every project, whether it’s a food festival or a fundraiser for animal welfare, reflects the incredible spirit of Aroostook County. Together, we’re building a more vibrant, inclusive, and compassionate community.”
