
115 Years Ago – Feb. 6, 1907
YMCA convention — Aroostook County took the lead at the recent YMCA convention of boys at Waterville, sending a full carload. They were accompanied by Sec. Smith and Pearl Whitney from Houlton.
Basketball — The Ricker boys went to Caribou Friday and played a game with the Caribou High School boys on Friday night. The game was an exciting one and a good one to watch. There was some good playing and also some poor playing, on both sides. Umpires Trusty of Caribou, Milliken of Houlton. There was a large crowd from Presque Isle and Washburn in attendance at the game. The Caribou concert band rendered several fine selections before the game which were enjoyed very much. After the game there was a school social. It was estimated that there were between three and four hundred people at the game.
75 Years Ago – Jan. 30, 1947
Barber Shop Destroyed By Fire — A Fire supposedly started from an oil burner, completely destroyed the interior of Marshall Stevens’ barber shop Monday morning. Firemen battled the fire for about two hours in order to save the potato house owned by Ivory Heath and the Town Hall. Help was called from the Sherman station and Island Falls.
50 Years Ago – Feb. 2, 1972
Junior Miss fourth runner-up — Debbie DeLong, Junior Miss Houlton of 1972, was one of 16 girls from all over the state who spent the past week working together and practicing to compete for the title of Junior Miss Maine. The contest climaxed Saturday evening at the Warsaw Junior High School in Pittsfield. Miss DeLong was chosen fourth runner-up to the title winner, Miss Elaine Hebeeb of Caribou, and she received a trophy and $100 for this honor.
25 Years Ago- Feb. 12, 1997
Harbison to be honored by chamber — Houlton businessman and community volunteer David Harbison has been named as the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce “Chamber Citizen of the Year.” Harbison, a driving force behind the success of last year’s Northern Maine Soapbox Derby, will be formally recognized for his achievements at the chamber’s annual business meeting Thursday, Feb. 13, 6 p.m.
Bowers named MFDA vice president — Anthony V. Bowers, CFSP of Bowers Funeral Home in Houlton and Island Falls, has been elected second vice president of the Maine Funeral Directors Association (MFDA) for 1996-97. A graduate of Cypress Community College in Southern California in 1987, Bowers has owned and operated Bowers Funeral Home since 1985 and received a certified funeral service practitioner certification in 1993. He was president of MFDA in 1989-1990, and belongs to the MFDA Disaster Response Team.
