Softball squads ready to roll in postseason

What an incredible season it has been for local softball squads, as all five teams in the Houlton Pioneer Times’ coverage area have qualified for the postseason.

The Houlton softball team finished 12-4 and are the No.5 seed in Class C North. Houlton must travel to No. 4 Mattanawcook Academy for a quarterfinal game on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 4 p.m. The Shires defeated MA twice during the year — 19-9 in the season opener April 20 and 3-1 on May 2.

Hodgdon softball (6-8) finished eighth in Class D North and will host No. 9 Shead Tuesday, June 7 in a prelim at 4 p.m. The two teams did not meet during the regular season.

Southern Aroostook softball (10-4) finished second in Class D North and will play the winner of Tuesday’s prelim game between No. 7 Woodland-No. 10 Highview Christian Academy on Thursday, June 9 (time TBA). SACS beat Woodland 7-6 and 19-9 during the regular season, but did not face Highview Christian Academy.

Katahdin softball (10-4) finished fourth in Class D North and will host No. 13 Fort Fairfield, Tuesday, June 7, 4 p.m. in a prelim game. The two teams did not meet during the regular season.

East Grand softball (7-8) finished 11th in Class D North and play at No. 6 Ashland, Tuesday, June 7 in a prelim at 3 p.m. The two teams did not meet during the regular season.

The playoffs continue Saturday, June 11 with semifinal games, while the Class C North championship will be played Tuesday, June 14, at 6:30 p.m. in Brewer, while the Class D North championship will be played Wednesday, June 15 at 6:30 p.m. in Brewer.

The following is a recap of the final regular season games that were reported to the newspaper.

PVHS 18, Katahdin 7 — At Stacyville May 31, the Howlers’ Erynn Williams, Kortney McKechnie and Miranda Brown each drove in four runs in a 22-hit attack against the Cougars.

For Katahdin, Courtney Stevens led the way with a two-run home run and Hannah Drew added three RBI’s.

Hodgdon 3, Limestone 15 — At Limestone May 31, Maddy Williams led the Eagles’ offense by going 4-4 with a grand slam and six RBI’s en route to the win. Kassee Albert and Brooke Bolduc each chipped in with two RBI’s.

For Hodgdon, Kendra Gresko had two RBIs and Tianna McEwen added two hits.

Lee Academy 4, Houlton 23 — At home June 1, Houlton’s Makayla Fitzpatrick fired a three-hitter and the Houlton bats exploded as the Shires rolled to the lopsided win over Lee Academy. Aspen Flewelling had two hits and three RBIs, while Tyra Gentle had two hits and an RBI.

For Lee Academy, Grace Cowan, Morgan Dodge and Kaylie Sawtelle posted a single apiece.
