The eighth-grade students at Easton High School are participating in “Do a Good Deed, The 9/11 Project.”
By entering this contest, students in grade 8 have a chance to win $500 for their class to use for a field trip. They are inviting guests to come into their homeroom on Sept 10 to have a light breakfast and discuss what it was like for them on 9/11/2001. It is hard to believe it happened 14 years ago and grade 8 students were not born yet!
As part of the project, they are asking Easton citizens to bring in a jar of peanut butter for our local food pantry. Jars can be dropped off between Sept. 10 and 17 at Easton High School. Thanks in advance for your help! Please contact the Easton High School office at 488-7702 if you plan on attending.
Project Grad bottle drive fundraiser
Easton High School Project Graduation will have a bottle drive on Saturday, Sept. 12 from noon to 2 p.m. The trailer will also be placed at the high school from Sept. 11-13, so please drop off your returnables. All donations are appreciated!
Happy Days Club update
The Happy Days Senior Citizens’ Club met for a potluck lunch Aug. 27 with six members and one guest present. The next meeting will be a potluck lunch on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 11:30 a.m. in the recreation room at the Manor. Seniors, please plan to attend and bring a friend.
Sesquicentennial trade show planned
There will be a trade show Saturday, Sept. 12 to showcase Easton’s businesses and organizations as part of the Town’s sesquicentennial celebration.
The event will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Easton Elementary School. Any Easton businesses and organizations interested in participating should contact Cheryl at the town office at 488-6652.
Volunteers needed at food pantry
The Friends Helping Friends Food Pantry is looking for a couple of volunteers who would be willing to deliver food boxes to needy families in Easton every other month. Each month two vehicles are needed for about an hour on the third Sunday afternoon from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Each vehicle delivers food to two or three families. If able to volunteer, call Vaughn Martin at 488-6608 or email vaughnmartin@myfairpoint.net.
Sesquicentennial items for sale
The committee is currently selling the following items to commemorate Easton’s year-long 150th celebration, including 20-ounce glasses with Bears and Sesquicentennial logos for $8, glass coffee mugs with Bears and Sesquicentennial logos, royal blue T-shirts with sesquicentennial logos for $8, royal blue hoodie sweatshirts with sesquicentennial logos for $25 and two-tone caps or standard caps with Easton Bears logos or Sesquicentennial logos for $10.

School fundraiser
The Easton PTO is collecting BoxTops for Education as an easy way to earn money for the school. Ask friends and family to save BoxTops for you, send them a self-addressed-stamped envelope and have them return their BoxTops to you. Parents, be sure to put your child’s name on the envelope and turn it into classroom teacher.
Kiwanis meetings
Kiwanis Club of Easton meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 6-7 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall and every is welcome to attend. Dinner is provided for a small fee.
Upcoming rec activities
A fall cooking camp will be offered by Chris Finnemore of the Maine Cooperative Extension Sept. 21, 22, 24 and 25 from 9:30 a.m.-noon at the Hall. The cost is $10. This program is open to children in grades 1 and up and they will accept up to 15 participants. Participants will cook with “fabulous fall foods,” including apples, corn, potatoes and pumpkins. The children will be serving the seniors dinner on Friday at 11:15 a.m. Please feel free to invite grandparents or other special folks in your child’s life.
Dance camp will be offered in conjunction with Moon Dance Studios on Sept. 28 and 29 and Oct. 1 and 2 from 9:30 – 11 a.m. at the Hall. The cost is $25 and is open to grades one and up. The class will focus on hip hop and jazz. Participants should dress in comfortable clothes to move easily.
Super Art Camp will be offered Oct. 5, 6, 8 and 9 from 10 a.m.-noon at the Hall. The cost is $8 and the camp is open to grades 1 and up. Participants will be exploring color, drawing techniques, and graphic design while creating their own super heroes. Then they’ll finish up with a multi-media portrait/poster of the new character.
Swimming lessons will be held at Gentile Hall and are open to children ages four and older. Students will be split by abilities. Classes will be held Mondays and Fridays at 1 p.m. from Sept. 21 through Oct. 9. Transportations departs from the hall at 12:30 p.m. and returns at 2:30 p.m. The cost is $30 for Easton residents.
Sewing classes will be offered Sept. 28 and 29 and Oct. 1 during the following times: Monday, 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Tuesday, 1:45-3 p.m.; and Thursday, 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The cost is $15, which includes all supplies. Participants must be in the first grade and there must be at least 6 paid participants to offer the class. This is a new program designed to teach children the basics of sewing. Participants will be learning to sew by hand and on a machine. The class will finish with their own tote bag project.
Yoga for Kids classes will be held on Wednesdays from Oct. 14-Nov. 18. There is no class Oct. 21. The cost is $20 and there must be 15 participants to run the program. Classes will take place at the hall at 4 p.m. and be instructed by Julie French. Children will stretch, strengthen, gain flexibility and balance through short, age-appropriate activities, as well as learn how to calm their bodies, breath and mind. Yoga has shown to improve concentration, memory, attention, problem-solving and decision-making — all terrific skills needed for learning.
