The 35th annual Washburn August Festival presents King and Queen, Braighton and Rena Farley of Perham.
Braighton grew up on Hines Street in Washburn and Rena was raised in St. Francis. They met on a blind date in 1965 and married in 1966. Braighton purchased a house in Perham, where they have made their home for 49 years. Two children, Alton and Nicole, completed their family.
They boast five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, whom all live in Maine. Rena started working at Nutting Egg Farm in the late 1960s. She is now retired from the Caribou Nursing Home after 20 years of service. Her hobbies include word-finds and cooking. Her family enjoys her chop suey, and she cherishes their company.
Braighton worked for the Town of Perham before and ended up retiring there. In the interim, he was also employed at Levesque Lumber Mill, the Town of New Sweden and Crown Equipment. While at Crown, he drove farm equipment in the Potato Blossom and August Festival parades. Braighton fondly remembers, as a teenager, riding with George Harris in the Osh Kosh plow, known as “The Squash.” His hobbies include gardening and building log cabin wooden banks. He also built his own windmill. Rena and Braighton are enjoying their retirement at home and with family. They are honored to be King and Queen for 2015.
