Leavitt, who plays out of Hillcrest Golf Club in Millinocket, ended up with a 143 (69 on Saturday and 74 on Sunday) for the tournament to defeat Watson, a June graduate of Fort Fairfield High School and a member of Aroostook Valley Country Club. Watson had Sunday’s low round of 69 to creep back into contention after shooting a 75 on the first day.
Ralph Michaud of Presque Isle carded a 150 to earn his third consecutive Joseph J. Freeman Award with the lowest gross score for a PICC member.
Overall low net honors went to Ron McAtee of Presque Isle with a 130.
A total of 218 golfers participated, a number tournament director and PICC club professional Barry Madore said is the second most since he has headed the tournament, a period that spans 23 years. Last year’s field had a record 222 golfers.
“The weather was not the most desirable, with off and on rain all weekend and chilly temperatures Sunday,” Madore said, “but we never had to stop play and things went smoothly. The course was in utterly beautiful condition and the players had a good time.”
