Improvements at Church of the Good Shepherd — The church has been shingled and painted two coats, the rectory has had a wide plazza built on the east side, and also received two coats of paint of a very attractive brown combination, the same as the church. All the work has been done under the supervision of the rector, Oliver Dow Smith.
New Ricker Principal — The election of Jonathan L. Dyer is a well merited promotion, as viewed by Maine educators.
75 Years Ago – July 25, 1940
Decline of cities — Publication of census figures for 1940 bears out the contention voiced during the past few years that cities are declining in population and that rural areas will show the major increases in size when the current tabulation is completed. Among the reason for this condition is the automobile and better roads which has made travel much easier into the smaller towns and suburbs. Farm population figures are not yet available but it seems doubtful if there will be any great increase.
Blasts New Deal — Two meetings of Aroostook County Republican workers heard volleys of blasts at the New Deal, predictions of a great republican majority vote, and details of the plans for the campaign from the lips of nominees and party officials.
50 Years Ago – July 22, 1965
Budget cut cited with street dust — Town Council Chairman Fred Greaves explained this week that a cut in the municipal budget for street maintenance made it impossible to adopt a new technique in applying tar to town streets, and as a result, the town is being plagued with another dust problem.

Area residents find two-way radios helpful and a lot of fun — During recent weeks, the number of two-way radios installed in automobiles in the Southern Aroostook area has increased considerably, and terms such as “10-4”, “73’s”, and QSL cards are becoming quite commonplace. Peggy Jones started the Southern Aroostook CB Radio Club, and her brother-in-law, Alex Jones, is now its president.

Michaud dials up McKernan on Contel’s fibre optic line — Representative Michael Michaud dialed Gov. John McKernan Jr. at 9 a.m. Thursday and placed a ceremonial first call from Contel of Maine’s newly completed Patten digital central office.
Council accepts $40,00 Rotary gift for arena sprinkler — A proposed sprinkler system that will expand use of the John Millar arena became another step closer to reality as Town Council members approved an order to accept more than $40,000 from the Rotary Club to help fund the project.
