HOULTON — Ryan Pelletier and Lance Albair were the guest speakers at a recent Houlton Rotary Club meeting. The two spoke on Job-driven National Emergency Grant (JD-NEG), which is designed to connect dislocated long term unemployed to the workforce. JD-NEG was awarded to 32 states, including Maine for a total of $150 million.

Maine received $4,850,000 while Aroostook and Washington Counties both received $1 million. Anyone who was unemployed for at least an aggregate of 27 weeks since December 2007 through  June 2009, due to the recession, is eligible.
Dislocated workers who are UI recipients and have been profiled as likely to exhaust their benefits, and dislocated workers who are foreign trained immigrant workers who have faced barriers to obtaining employment in their field of profession.
As an employer, at times some may look past these individuals, due to not have been employed for a long period of time. However, they may very well be the perfect person for an opening. These individuals need to get back to work and will more than likely be more motivated to do their best to ensure continued employment and show appreciation for you having hired them.
One of the great benefits to the employer is that if the employee needs training, which all do, then the program will assist with the financial burden. The JD-NEG will pay for 50 percent of the on-the-job training wages with the understanding that the employee will be hired on “full time” when the training is completed.
Those who are in need of employees are strongly urged to contact Albair at ACAP 1-800-432-7881 or at lalbair@acap-me.org.
