CROUSEVILLE – Sergeant First Class Kenneth A. Glidden, Retired, 67, passed away Monday night, January 12, 2015, at his home. He was born in Presque Isle on Dec. 1, 1947, the youngest son of Harland E. Glidden and Dorothea (Nickerson) Glidden.
Most of his adult working career was spent working on active duty for the National Guard with several different titles during his career. He enlisted in January of 1967 and was discharged in January of 2002. Among those titles were Administrative Supply Technician, Training NCO, and Readiness NCO. During his 35 years of service to his State and Nation he also assumed the duties of Chief of Firing Battery for many years, Battalion Ammunition Sergeant, Assistant Operations Sergeant and also acted as Operations Sergeant for the 1st Bn 152 Field Artillery.
Among the accomplishments, he was most proud of during his service were being a key member of establishing the Battalion Safety School, helping to establish a satellite NCO Academy for the Northern “County” “soldiers, administering training in the White Mountains for the State Area Command’s training. This training included a rappelling, orientation course and other survival skills. He was also qualified as a Nuclear Authenticator. He also provided training to NATO representatives on the capabilities of the M198 Howitzer at CFB Gagetown, Canada. He had trained there over 25 times. He had numerous service ribbons and was most proud of his Humanitarian Service Medal which he achieved due to his volunteer service to the communities. He gave numerous classes for Hunter’s Safety, Junior Marksmanship Training for the Caribou Recreation Center, and never refused to help with Military Veteran Graveside services by providing dozens of firing parties for funerals. In later years, he had served as the Adjutant for the American Legion Post #88.
Ken enjoyed fishing every year with his lifelong friend, Edward Hendsbee, of Belgrade and also his nephew, Randy Carney, of Presque Isle, who also spent time with him during some of his later years. He particularly enjoyed both the Fish River Chain of Lakes where he and his wife had a camp and also visited some special lakes near Patten, where his friend Ted had a camp and where Ken won many cribbage tournaments!
Ken said he had a great life and loved all of those people in his life. He especially loved children and the joy they bring! He also loved campfires, toasting marshmallows, tying flies, boating, tubing, picnics and the beauty that God gave everyone by stepping outside. (The beauty of the Earth itself and the creatures and people therein). He was also very fond of his nieces, Sam Carney and Courtney Carney, who also spent many days enjoying life at the camp. He was very appreciative of the help he received in later years from the Beecher and Bonnie Ouellette, Heidi, Randy, Courtney and Sam Carney and Charlie Munn when he was unable to do the things he loved to do.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Mavis (Munn) Glidden, of Crouseville; his son, Aaron D. Glidden of Moses Lake, WA; his brother, Dwaine E. Glidden of King of Prussia, PA; two stepsons, Jason Briggs of New Milford, CT, and Shawn Briggs of Chicago, IL; two special grandchildren, Tristan Glidden and Piper Glidden of Moses Lake, WA.
