In 2013, officials with Greater Houlton Christian Academy announced the school had received the largest donation in its history. Thanks to that gift, two more facility and grounds updates were completed over the recent Christmas break.
“We are delighted to have installed a glass entryway at the top of the stairs,” said John Bishop, head of school. “This will be a tremendous help in saving on heating costs now that the cold air from the outside is contained. In addition, the new glass entryway fits seamlessly with the character of our historic building, which is something we always strive to achieve when upgrading our facility.”
Also during the Christmas break, the building across the street from the school was torn down. Bishop added, “Last summer when the property was listed for sale we realized there could be opportunities to expand our parking lot or have land available for other uses.”
Separate from the donation that helped fund the two upgrades, GHCA has replaced all its lighting to more energy efficient LED technology. Due to the volunteer labor to replace the lighting and the rebate that will be received from Efficiency Maine, this project did not cost the school money, but is anticipated to provide a cost savings in electricity.
“Several volunteers spent many hours replacing the lights,” said Bishop. “We are extremely grateful for their hard work and for the rebate.”
GHCA looks forward to a community open house in conjunction with its science fair on April 14 from 6-8 p.m.
“We know many people in this community attended here when it was known as Lambert School,” explained Bishop, “and we invite everyone to stop by and see the amazing improvements that have been made to our school!”
