Mapleton resident charged with domestic assault

MAPLETON, Maine A local man has been charged with domestic assault and terrorizing following an incident Oct. 29, 2014 at a Mapleton residence.

“On Wednesday afternoon, sheriff’s deputies responded to High Street in Mapleton following a report that Matthew Chapman,  33, of Mapleton, was threatening people at a residence he shared with his girlfriend and several children. Chapman left before deputies arrived,” said Chief Deputy Sheriff Darrell Crandall, of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office.
Crandall said witnesses reported that Chapman’s girlfriend — who is not being identified — and several family members were in the process of moving the girlfriend’s possessions out of the home when Chapman arrived, started an altercation with them and made violent threats against the girlfriend’s mother. Witnesses advised deputies that Chapman drove toward Ashland when he left.
“Further investigation revealed that Chapman had assaulted the girlfriend, in front of two children, earlier in the week. At the request of deputies, Ashland police located Chapman’s truck and detained him pending their arrival. Deputies arrested Chapman and charged him with domestic assault and threatening,” said Crandall.
Chapman was transported to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.
“Chapman made an initial appearance before District Court Judge David Soucy on Friday. Judge Soucy set Chapman’s bail at $500 cash and also restricted Chapman’s contact with the alleged victim and other family members. Chapman will also be prohibited from processing firearms and must submit to random searches for firearms,” Crandall said.
Chapman will also be required to have a Maine Pre-Trial supervision contact, noted Crandall.
As of presstime, Chapman remained at the County Jail awaiting his next court appearance, which will be Nov. 21 at Presque Isle District Court.
