ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired awarded Margaret Cleary of Boulder, Colo., the prestigious John H. McAulay Award during its 2014 international conference in San Antonio in August.
AER established the John H. McAulay Award to honor professionals who have contributed outstanding efforts and achievements leading to the placement of people with visual impairments in productive employment.
Cleary has worked tirelessly to impact the vocational lives of visually impaired and blind consumers and their workers.
The daughter of Donald and Marion McCluskey, Margaret graduated from Houlton High School and worked as a staff nurse at the then Madigan Memorial Hospital and private duty nurse at the Aroostook Hospital. She received her rehabilitation nursing education in Boston and lived in Sudbury, Mass. for many years with her husband and family. She currently lives in Boulder with her daughter Jennifer Cleary.
Retired as director of admissions and diabetes educator from the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, Mass., she currently develops and teaches the Center’s distance education series “Diabetes and Visual Impairment: a New View Online”. Licensed as a nurse in Colorado with a private practice, she provides Colorado State Services for the Blind adaptive health and diabetes home self-managing instructions.
