Caribou FFA members plant Pink Pumpkin Patch to raise breast cancer awareness

Caribou Future Farmers of America Chapter has joined with the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation to sell pink-skinned pumpkins and donate a percentage of the proceeds to reputable organizations invested in breast cancer research just in time for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.FFA chapters across the nation were given a unique opportunity to grow pink pumpkin seeds to help raise awareness and join the fight against breast cancer through the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation, a non-profit created to raise funds for breast cancer research through the sale of pink pumpkins.
The Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation, with the help of seed dealer Seedway, provided seed to FFA and 4H chapters across the country free of charge. In exchange, the chapters committed to growing and selling the pumpkins during the season and contribute half the proceeds to the foundation, while keeping the balance for their own chapter fundraising and to offset growing costs.
The Caribou FFA Chapter jumped at the opportunity to do just that and obtained 100 seeds. Those seeds were then planted at the Caribou Technology Center School Farm. The pumpkins were ready for harvest this week and are available to purchase at the Caribou Technology Center Agriculture Department or by contacting Caribou FFA adviser, Casey Cote at casey_cote@rsu39.org.
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women: one in every eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her life. The Caribou FFA Chapter has joined forces with the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation because, “We are inspired by the cause and like to know that our donation may give someone life again.”
