PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Students at Northern Maine Community College have only been back at campus a few weeks, but already they have had time off from classes, following two recent bomb threats.
The Presque Isle Police Department received the first report of a bomb threat around 8:22 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014. A security guard for the campus advised “a message was located in the bathroom stall in the Christie Building.” He was told an officer would meet him outside.
The Maine State Police were notified, and Trooper Shawn Whalen and his K-9 responded to perform a search of the building. NMCC officials implemented evacuation procedures. Once Whalen completed his search, the building was cleared and people were allowed back inside.
A second threat was reported around 6:19 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18.
A security guard reported the threat, which he said was “written in the bathroom on the wall in the Edmunds Center.” He advised the PIPD he’d begun the evacuation process and was securing the building.
Whalen was again notified and responded with his bomb-detecting dog to search the structure for explosives.
Nothing was found and shortly before 10 p.m. people were allowed back in the building.
Both cases remain under investigation.
