There was plenty of action on the soccer fields as the high school season is well under way. One of the highlights of the week was the Houlton Shiretowners earning their first win of the season.
Howe scores in double overtime
On Friday night, the Shiretowners were not as lucky, as the Fort Kent Warriors overtook them 4-1 at home. However, the Shires only trailed 2-0 at halftime.
Abe Lorom scored the second-half goal for Houlton, while goalie A.J. Henderson stopped 14 of 24 shots faced. The Warriors’ keeper Chris Daigle had nine saves on 13 shots.
Last Tuesday, the Shiretowners picked up their first win defeating Schenk, 1-0, on a late second overtime goal by freshman Pat Howe. Howe scored with 1:58 left in the second overtime on a Jake Worthley assist.
Coach Mike Carlos believes the team is improving with every practice.
“We are young and inexperienced,” he said. “But, each time we touch the ball, we improve. There were some outstanding performances by a number of players, but our backs showed up when we needed them.”
The quartet of Worthley, Zack Fitzpatrick, Mason McCarthy and Noah Blake made defensive stops to help hold Schenck scoreless.
“A.J. Henderson made a number of saves (10 in the game) to give us a chance to win the game,” said Carlos. “However, it was total team effort to secure the win.”
Schenck’s goalie Justin Thompson made 13 saves against 18 shots faced.
Lady Shires fight to scoreless double overtime tie
The Houlton girls soccer team fought to a scoreless double overtime tie with Fort Kent last Friday in Houlton.
Houlton keeper Katie Condon set back five of the six Warriors shots, while Fort Kent’s goalie Alexa Pelletier turned away 10 of 13 Houlton shots.
Fort Kent is now 2-1-3 and Houlton is 2-0-1.
Hodgdon boys split with opponents
The Hodgdon Hawks split with their opponents on the week, as they fell to Washburn 5-0, but nipped East Grand, 2-1.
Last Friday at Hodgdon, Alex Pelletier scored twice to lift the Beavers to victory. The other goals were scored by Cameron Bragg, Noah Farley and Kenny Irving.
Last Tuesday, the Hawks used two second-half goals just four minutes apart to defeat host East Grand, 2-1.
At Danforth, Jimmy Buzzell and Jerrod Merritt each scored to rally Hodgdon.
East Grand’s goal came from Kyle Gilman, who scored off a Philip Farley assist.
Hodgdon keeper Trevor Larson made 22 saves, while East Grand’s Thomas Gilman turned back 16 shots.
Lady Hawks lose by opposite extremes to Washburn, East Grand
The Hodgdon Lady Hawks were beaten by extremes last week, as on Friday, the Hodgdon girls were overpowered 13-2 by Washburn and last Tuesday, they were edged, 1-0 by East Grand.
Mackenzie Worcester racked up seven goals and an assist for Washburn.
The Lady Hawks’ goals were scored by Rachel Harmon and Jill Gough
Last Tuesday in East Grand, the game-winner came on a second-half tally by Bethany Lindsey off a Sarah Stoddard pass.
East Grand goalie Chelsea Winiarski made 14 saves, while Hodgdon’s keeper, Jessica Drew, made 19 saves.
The East Grand girls shut out Highview Christian last Thursday 3-0 in Charleston.
Allison McEwen scored twice and Lindsey added a goal for the Danforth girls in the win. Hannah Crone and Kianna Cassie each chipped in with an assist.
East Grand keeper Winiarski had seven saves, while Megan McDonald and Kayla Januskiewicz combined in goal for Highview to stop 16 of 19 shots.
Southern Aroostook boys and girls stung by Hornets
The Southern Aroostook boys and girls soccer teams both fell to visiting Ashland last Wednesday.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead on Jackson Mathers’ first-half goal, but watched the game slip away in the last nine minutes of regulation, as Ashland racked up four goals.
Ashland’s Mike Cook keyed the comeback with a pair of goals and Cody Blair scored the tying goal with 9:43 left, while teammate Alex Kaiser had the other tally.
Southern Aroostook keeper Austin White turned back eight shots, while Ashland’s Tim Tarr had an assist off his punt on Blair’s score and also had eight saves on goal.
The Southern Aroostook girls were overpowered in their matchup, 10-1.
Marissa Chase and Savannah Flint each scored three goals to propel the Hornets to the win and to remain undefeated at 6-0.
The Lady Warriors’ lone goal was scored by Jess Nye.
Katahdin boys win one in double overtime, while girls lose, tie
In Stacyville on Monday, the Katahdin boys and girls both were overtaken by Bangor Christian.
In the boys’ game, the Patriots blanked Katahdin, 6-0, behind two goals apiece by Tyler Welch and Josh Palmeter. Bangor Christian goalie Dennis Farnham made seven saves.
For Katahdin, keeper T.J. Young rejected 21 of 27 shots faced.
In the girls’ game, Bangor Christian picked up a 2-0 win on first-half goals. Maddy Hall scored eight minutes into the game and Kate Jones hit the second goal with nine seconds left in the half.
According to Katahdin coach Lisa Timberlake, “In the second half, both teams had shots on goal, but neither side was able to score.”
Katahdin goalie Courtney Stevens had 27 saves, while Bangor Christian’s Sierra McDonald made eight saves.
Last Friday, the Katahdin boys fell to Schenck, 3-0, while the girls battled to a 1-1 tie.
In East Millinocket, Chris King and Brandon Danforth scored first-half goals to lift Schenck to the win. Goalie Justin Thompson made eight saves on nine shots.
For Katahdin, Cody Brownlee made nine saves on 14 shots in goal.
On the girls’ side, the game ended in a 1-all tie in East Millinocket.
Emma Alley scored a first-half goal for Schenck/Stearns, but Bailey Moody-Kay scored the equalizer in the second half of action.
Katahdin keeper Stevens set back 11 of 17 shots, while Schenck/Stearns goalie, Taylor McLaughlin, stopped 10 of 11 shots faced.
Last Tuesday, the Katahdin boys edged Penobscot Valley, 3-2, behind senior Shey Lane’s game-winner in double overtime. Lane scored on a header off Nick Lane’s cross on a direct kick.
In the first half, Katahdin’s Daniel Moody-Kay, assisted by Brody Guiggey, and Grant Doane of Penobscot Valley swapped goals. Katahdin’s Tyson Porter made good on a penalty kick with 12:08 left in regulation, but Doane hit the equalizer with 9:06 remaining forcing the first overtime.
Katahdin’s goalkeeper, Cody Brownlee saved 16 shots, while PVHS’ Joseph Higgins had five stops.
