CA looks to qualify

MARS HILL, Maine — The Central Aroostook Panthers’ golf team, under the direction of seventh-year coach Adam Metzler, is coming off a successful 2013 season.

As a team, the squad finished second in the Aroostook League Championship and eighth in the team state championship. Alex Folsom had a top 10 finish in the team state tourney. The Panthers also had two players, Folsom and Chandler Brewer, qualify for the individual state championship. With a senior-laden squad in 2014, the Panthers are hoping to repeat their success of a year ago.
The Panthers lost two seniors from last year’s team in Megan King and Cory Richardson. In addition, Brewer, a senior, suffered a torn ACL during summer basketball and will be unable to participate.
Leading the way will be senior Alex Folsom. He had a strong junior season, and was a consistent performer every time out. With continued improvement, Folsom may well be one of the County’s top golfers this season.
The No. 2 golfer will be senior Kenny Bell. Metzler describes Bell as “a very steady and consistent golfer for the team.” Senior Zack Grass will man the third position in the lineup. Metzler likes what Grass brings to the team. “He is great at keeping things light and relaxing no matter what the situation,” explained Metzler.
The four and five spots are interchangeable in the early going, with senior Zach McClung holding the early edge. McClung is a solid athlete, and is in fact playing both soccer and golf this fall. Despite the difficulty of that situation, McClung is handling it very well.
The other golfer in the lineup is Shane Stackpole, the lone freshman on the squad who should benefit greatly from the senior leadership on the team.
“He had a great foundation and has a lot going for him,” stated Metzler, who looks for Stackpole to improve steadily as the season goes along.
