Our back outside playpen for our dogs has seen many years of use. When it was built, it was basically a gravel base. Over time crushed rock was added, but it was never easy to use or maintain.

Charles Fitzgerald, a Job Corps student, is working hard on the new cement that will greatly improve the outside dog pens at the Central Aroostook Humane Society, located on Cross Street in Presque Isle. Once completed, the “dog playpen” will allow dogs to enjoy some fresh air in an area that’s safe, secure and much easier to clean than the old structure it replaced.
Our Manager, Betsy Hallett, spoke of how impossible it was to disinfect and when it came to rainy or wet weather, the dogs were covered in mud and were a mess to clean up after. We recently had two amazing fellows arrive to fix this ongoing problem.
Allen Brown, who heads up the Job Corps masonry projects, and his right-hand man, Charles Fitzgerald, showed up at the Central Aroostook Humane Society. They worked hard clearing out the entire back playpen, laying the wire, poured the cement and smoothed it out to a perfect area for our shelter dogs.
Betsy said, “Just keeping the parasites down and being able to disinfect and thoroughly clean the area is a huge help.”
They did an awesome job.
This isn’t the first time that Job Corps has come to our rescue. Quite a few years ago they built our current storage building and most Fridays you will find a group of students hard at work at the shelter doing everything from cleaning cat cages and laundry to giving all the dogs a much-needed walk around the block.
We are gearing up for a couple of our fun fall fundraisers! We will be set up once again just inside the Forum entryway during their Fall Arts, Crafts & Collectibles Show. We will be selling our newest T-shirt design, plus have some of our older styles out for a bargain price. Homemade doggie treats are always a favorite and we are planning to also have some “human treats” as well! Be sure to stop by and say hello and let us know how your four-legged family members are doing!
In November, we have finalized the date for our most popular, fun and most successful event. Friday, Nov. 21, will see a great evening with family and friends for our annual Toast For The Animals and Silent Auction. Stay tuned for more details.
If you have ever wanted to help the animals of our area but didn’t want to commit to being a board member, this is your opportunity to join the Friends of CAHS group. This group meets quarterly, helps support the Central Aroostook Humane Society in fund-raising and other fun ventures. Meet a great group of people that share a love for our four-legged friends and a hope to make our county a better place for the animals. This is open to all communities in Aroostook County. Together we can do great things!
We still have so many kittens and cats that are available for adoption, please stop by or check out Petfinders.com and Facebook. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closing noon to 12:30 p.m. for lunch. Please be responsible, spay and neuter your pets!
