1889: New road will connect store to rail station

115 Years Ago-Aug. 24, 1899

• Ulrich Bros. shipped the first carload of potatoes for this season.
• A large number of men and horses are at work on the new road leading from Jacob Hedman’s store to where a railroad station will be erected near the Madawaska Stream.

100 Years Ago-Aug. 20, 1914

• Neighbors ford river to fight fire — Lightning struck the Hoyt and Wheeler barn on the north side of the Aroostook River, three miles from Presque Isle, Tuesday afternoon, burning the 136 foot building, a large cattle barn, two cows, 180 tons of hay, and a large amount of machinery. Neighbors on the south shore forded the river and others gathered quickly and fought the flames with buckets.
• Caribou’s own fair — The first annual Fair and Potato Carnival, under the auspices of the Aroostook Co. Fair Association at Caribou will be held Sept. 8 and 9.

75 Years Ago-Aug. 24, 1939

• Flying school at airport — The Island Crop Dusting Company announced plans for the opening, about Sept. 1, of an up-to-date aviation school. The flying school will add courses to include shop training instruction, aerodymanics and navigation, theory of flight, and meteorology.
• Civic League votes to construct archway — About 20 members of the (Caribou) Civic League were present for a covered dish picnic and meeting at the fish hatchery on Monday. The league voted to construct an archway entrance to the town on the Presque Isle road. Mrs. Ethel Roberts reported for a committee of investigation on the project consisting of herself and Mrs. E. J. Briggs.

50 Years Ago-Aug. 20, 1964

• Crossing guards needed — With opening of schools in Caribou only a week and a half away, patrolmen (or women) are needed for school crossings, says Chief of Police Rufus Bernard. There are four oppenings for the police posts. Bernard stresses that women who are qualified to handle the jobs, are as acceptable as men for the school crossing patrol duties.
• Hot dog & drink, just ten cents — Graves Red & White Supermarket, “The Big Store in the Big Town, Caribou,” is featuring a special promotion in their parking lot and Friday and Saturday. Get a hot dog & drink for only 10 cents, Kirschner’s dogs and Cott’s drinks.

25 Years Ago-Aug. 23, 1989

• Dedication for Caribou’s Lyndon Park — A cannon salute near the Caribou Stream began the formal dedication of Lyndon Park in downtown Caribou last Thursday. Guests were welcomed by Fran Pierson, chairman of the Caribou Civic Beautification Committee, following the posting of colors by presented by the Loring Air Force Base Color Guard. Cynthia Tornquist, secretary of the Caribou Garden Club, gave the invocation.
• Belyea phoned by Dolly Parton — Ray Belyea of Caribou told everyone not to touch his room telephone at Maine Medical Center after (you would never guess) he had received a personal call from Dolly Parton. Ray is a big fan and wanted to go to her concert in Portland but was too sick. A note was given to a guard by his sister who said he would see that Dolly received it. Not only did she read it, but also she made a personal call to Ray.
