Food pantries benefit from local donation
NorState Federal Credit Union recently donated over $31,000 to local food pantries during their 73rd annual membership meeting, held June 7 in Madawaska.
Over 300 members were in attendance to witness the following pantries receiving sizable donations from NorState’s 2013 Ending Hunger Campaign: Grand Isle, Sinclair, St. Agatha, St. David, Frenchville, Madawaska, Van Buren, Eagle Lake, Ashland, Fort Kent, Presque Isle, Fort Fairfield and Easton. These agencies were the recipients of checks for their community’s food pantry and a NorState Ending Hunger certificate.
NorState was recognized this past year as the second largest Ending Hunger fundraiser in Maine. For many years, NorState has trailed a close second to a very large southern credit union.
“Every year we continually are humbled by the generosity of our membership,” stated Ending Hunger coordinator for NorState FCU, Shirley Cyr.
“We all recognize the need in our community to end hunger and credit unions are a cooperative of members who come together for a people helping people philosophy,” said Cyr.
“We have 13 food pantries that we assist in northern and central Aroostook, and this huge undertaking to help in any way we can is completely dependent on the generosity of our members, family and friends,” added Cyr.
To donate toward the NorState FCU Ending Hunger Campaign, stop by any branch office in Madawaska, Fort Kent, Eagle Lake, Ashland, Presque Isle or Van Buren. You can also donate by sending your tax-deductible donation to NorState FCU, 78 Fox Street, Madawaska, ME 04756. All monies go directly to local pantries and assisting neighbors in need.
NorState membership donates to local charities
What made this year’s membership meeting unique was instead of giving out collective tokens to members attending, NorState FCU decided to donate to local charities of choice in the member’s name. Selection ballots were given out to each attendee to choose from a list of local charitable organizations that they would want to see benefit from the donation.
“For each voting member, a $3 donation will be made to the charity of their choice,” explained Denise Duperre, marketing director for NorState FCU.
Receiving donations in the members’ names will be Hope & Justice Project, Central Aroostook Humane Society, Aroostook National Wildlife Society, Heather Liam Connection, Homeless Services of Aroostook, Veterans of Foreign Wars, ANGEL Flight, PALS (Patient Airlift Services), American Red Cross, NorState Campaign for Ending Hunger, United Way, Mizpah, RSVP (Retired Seniors Volunteer Program), Aroostook Hospice Foundation, Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund, and Maine Winter Sports Center. A total of $600 will be donated amongst these 16 local charitable organizations.
