AUGUSTA — Recently, in recognition of National Older Americans Month in Maine and nationwide, Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger presented five checks for $300 each to the Agencies on Aging Meals on Wheels programs. The presentation took place at the Spectrum Generations’ Hallowell location, where the funds were presented to a representative from each agency before the food delivery vans left to make the day’s visits.

The selected agencies included Aroostook Area Agency on Aging, which serves Aroostook County.
“This donation helps meet a need that is not felt just this month, but throughout the year,” explained Jon Paradise, vice president of governmental and public affairs for the Maine Credit Union League. “With more than 5 percent of seniors in our state experiencing food insecurity, Maine ranks 17th in the nation, and first in New England, in terms of senior food insecurity. This is truly a problem that demands our attention every day of the year.”
Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country.
Each year, nearly all of Maine’s credit unions participate in the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger. Since 1990, when this collective effort began, Maine’s credit unions have raised and distributed $5.3 million to help end hunger in Maine.
