Mapleton Elementary School students gathered in the gym May 29 to show off their science experiments. According to organizer and fifth-grade teacher Christi Doyen, the science fair is mandatory for all fifth-grade students and open to the rest of the school to any interested. Twenty-one fifth-graders and another 15 students from the younger grades participated. All students had to follow the scientific method, and after nearly six weeks of research and preparation, the students were ready to share their newfound knowledge with classmates and family.

Experiments included materials such as bread, eggs, gummy bears, soap, balloons, wood, ice, borax and popsicle sticks. When asked what the best part of her experiment was, fifth-grader Alexis Getchell said, “making the (display) board.” Her experiment that she worked on with her father featured petrified wood. Fellow fifth-grader Amanda Winslow posed the question, “Can sunlight run a car?” She began the search for her project looking for “cool ideas on the Internet.” After settling on her topic, she and her father surprised her mother one day by taking apart all of her family’s outdoor solar lights to complete her list of supplies!
Krista Williams, another fifth-grader, focused on balloon inflation for her project. When asked how she decided on her topic, she excitedly explained, “I love balloons and wanted to do something with balloons.” She proved that a latex balloon could be inflated using baking soda, water and vinegar.
Fifth-grader Holden Stoutamyer wanted to do an experiment that, according to him, was “outside the box.” He decided to test the strength of popsicle sticks with his truss bridge designs. The strongest of his three designs was a crowd pleaser, able to hold 200 pounds without breaking. Another clear favorite was Gunner Carter’s bouncy ball experiment. He made bouncy balls from borax and then had complimentary balls for all the children that attended! They all were literally, “bouncing off the walls!”
