The City-Wide Yard Sale was a big success with 106 yard sales around town and plenty of traffic all around. My neighbor said they did $1,500 over the weekend which is great. The only thing that bothers me — and it bothers me a great deal — are those that do their yard sales and piggyback on their neighbors without signing up like everyone else. It’s a free country and a person can do whatever they want on their property, but it is low to take advantage of neighbors like that and to skimp on $15 when the traffic we bring in makes them hundreds. Oh well, there will always be great people in this world and others that aren’t so great.
What I did appreciate was those that came in and said they were too late to get on the map but wanted to buy the signs so they could at least be official. Good on them! Thanks also to our sponsors, The Par and Grill, Burger Boy and Paradis’ Shop ‘N Save.
I was involved in two big meetings this week. The first was to finalize plans for Thursdays on Sweden. We are doubling our efforts on what was a major breakthrough for the area last year. It was so great to have hundreds of people on the street in downtown Caribou having a good time together. It isn’t flashy. There are no roller coasters or thrill rides. It’s a gathering of people sharing a nice evening and each other. Go to our website and get the schedule! The first one is coming right up on June 12!
We also had a meeting to plan Caribou Cares About Kids, scheduled for August 8 and 9. We have condensed all the fun down to two days this year on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Chamber will have its annual tie-dye T-shirt and music-grooving extravaganza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with other games and surprises. That evening will be the annual parade with the theme: “Caribou: Past, Present and Future.” We thought the title appropriate (It was Chief Gahagan’s idea) with so many of our businesses and organizations having major anniversary celebrations.
After the parade, it will be Movie Night at Teague Park. On Saturday, Cary Medical Center and the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department will hold Family Fun Day at Teague Park which transforms that entire acreage into this huge play station for everyone! The park is always packed on those Saturdays.
And the festivities will conclude with, “Teen Night in the Park” which will feature music at the Gazebo from 7-10 and other fun activities.
We encourage businesses and service clubs to be involved. Come to the parade! Proudly display your anniversaries! Wear vintage clothes in your stores on Thursday and Friday (we might have a contest!). Hold events at your businesses, clubs and organizations. Let’s celebrate together!
With all the rain and the late spring, the Caribou Country Club is finally open. It’s a great course with really friendly people and playing a round of golf with a bud, best girl or your family is a lot less expensive than you would think. Better yet, join the club and join us on the course for fresh air, some challenging play and a beautiful view pretty much everywhere you look. Don’t let the “country club” words put images in your head. There isn’t a snob in the bunch! Leagues are now forming too, so inquire today.
