The Presque Isle girls’ tennis team improved its record to 4-0 following victories over Fort Kent and Hermon on back-to-back days last week.
“It was the second time we played Fort Kent in a week and it is always hard pulling off a second win against a very good team,” said coach Monica Bearden. “It was tough going into the Hermon match being down one because of the forfeit [in second doubles], but my girls played very well against a good team to pull off the win.”
At Fort Kent Thursday, the Wildcats pulled off the 5-0 victory. Sara Gilson defeated Lauren Doak, 8-2, in first singles, while Hilary Boucher bested Kelsey Pelletier, 8-2, and Blair Bailey stopped Alexa Pelletier, 8-4, in the other singles matches. For doubles, Michelle Cawley and Lora Ireland got past Sam Dubay and Amelia Guimond, 8-2, while Sarah Morneault and Sedona Lucas edged past Brooke Jandreau and Rudy Martin, winning 9-8 (8-6 in the tie-breaker).
At home Friday against the Hawks, PI won by a score of 4-1. Gilson downed Kaitlyn Reynolds, 8-2, Boucher blanked Rebeka Bullard, 8-0, and Bailey cruised past Ashleigh Beaulieu, 8-1. In doubles play, Morneault and Ireland beat Erin Iverson and Cassandra Cliff, 8-6. Hermon’s Shaeleigh Kirkbride and Hannah Lynch won in No. 2 doubles by forfeit.
The Presque Isle boys split their matches, beating Fort Kent 3-2 while losing to Hermon by the same score.
Against the Warriors, No. 1 singles player Liam Hughes of PI won a tough match against Lance Jandreau, 9-7, and third singles player Mike Michaud of the Wildcats was an 8-5 winner over Eric Deschene. In No. 2 singles, Ryan Chasse of Fort Kent rolled past PI’s Chris Carroll, 8-1. Doubles action saw Tito Naranja and Kamran Hussain double up on Byron Winslow and Andrew Dyer of the Wildcats, 8-4, while PI’s second doubles team of Denny Young and Tyler Ayotte beat Rowan Stamp-David Roy, 8-3.
The following day, Hughes dominated Hermon’s Chandler Sperrey, 8-0, in the first singles match, while Carroll was dominant in an 8-1 triumph over Sam Pryzk. However, PI was swept in the other three matches. Alex Marsh beat Michaud in third singles, 8-1, while on the doubles court, Jon Sirois and Mat Allen of the Hawks got past Winslow and Dyer, 8-3, with Jon Bergeron and Corbin Tate of Hermon handling Young and Ayotte, 8-4.
The Wildcats took on Ellsworth Tuesday and square off against Houlton today and then play a doubleheader with Madawaska Thursday. The Regional Singles Tournament is scheduled for Saturday in Caribou.
