Houlton High School honor parts – 2014

Houlton High School Principal Marty Bouchard is pleased to announce the Honor Parts for the Class of 2014.
Robert Woods was named valedictorian, while Kole Buzzeo was chosen as salutatorian; Sarah Abbotoni, first honor essayist; Josh Sullivan, second honor essayist; and Barrett Dunn, third honor essayist.
Valedictorian Robert Woods
Woods is the son of Karl and Lisa Woods of Houlton. He is vice-president of Houltons High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society and is active in Youth in Government, while also participating in Dirigo Boys State. He has received the Principal’s Award each year and is the recipient of the Phi Beta Kappa Award for Academic Excellence, the “Best Bill” Award at Maine Youth in Government, the freshman English Award, and was named Student of the Month for Excellence in Math and Science. In addition, Woods was selected to attend the People to People Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. in his eighth grade year and was the freshman class vice-president.
Woods participates in Houlton High School’s tennis, band, and jazz band programs, while also earning a place in All Aroostook Band. He also enjoys skiing, tennis, music, and Robert’s hobbies include reading, kayaking, boating, foosball, and gaming.  He will attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick, where he will major in biology.
Salutatorian Kole Buzzeo
Buzzeo is the son of Kim Buzzeo of Houlton. He is a member of Houlton’s chapter of the National Honor Society and is active in the mentoring program. Buzzeo has received the Principal’s Award each year and the Ervin Stone Excellence in Algebra Award. He was also selected to receive the Frederick Douglass and Susan B Anthony Award for humanities and social justice, and was the recipient of Houlton High School’s Perfect Attendance Award in his freshman through sophomore years. In addition, he was chosen as Houlton High School’s representative at the New England Student Leadership Conference.
Buzzeo is the varsity captain for Houlton High School’s basketball, baseball, and soccer teams, and is employed at the Houlton Recreation Department. He enjoys playing and watching sports and collecting basketball sneakers.  Kole will attend Babson College in Wellesley, Mass. where he will major in business and finance.
First honor essayist
Sarah Abbotoni

Abbotoni is the daughter of Daryl and Heidi Abbotoni of Houlton. She is a member of Houlton High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society and was chosen to participate in the Houlton Rotary Club’s Summer Exchange Program, where she will travel to Italy this summer. Abbotoni is an honors student who has received the Principal’s Award throughout her senior year and is the recipient of the Excellence in English Award, the Williams College Book Award, and was awarded a Houlton Rotary Club Certificate of Achievement in her freshman through senior years.
She was selected as student of the month in her eighth grade year and again in her junior year for excellence in English and Languages. Abbotoni also placed third in the STEM Science Fair in the psychology division during her sophomore year, and was selected to attend Model State Legislature Youth in Government in her junior year.
Abbotoni participates in Houlton High School’s show choir, band, pep band, and is employed at McDonald’s restaurant in Houlton. She enjoys skiing, tubing, cooking, reading, writing, and swimming. Sarah will attend the University of Maine in Orono, where she was the recipient of the Presidential Scholarship. Her major is undeclared.
Second honor essayist
Josh Sullivan

Sullivan is the son of Christopher and Michelle Sullivan of Houlton. He is president of Houlton High School’s Chapter of the National Honor Society, Student Council President, and served as president of his sophomore and junior classes while holding the position of vice-president during his senior year.
In addition, he is a Houlton High School mentor and was a peer tutor during his junior year, while also serving as a student representative to the RSU 29 Board of Directors both years. Sullivan has served on the Youth in Government Executive Committee the past three years, was a finalist in the United States Senate Youth Program this year, and was selected to attend Dirigo Boys State and the New England Youth Leadership Conference in his junior year. He has also represented Houlton High School in the Academic Decathlon and Business Titan Challenge.
Sullivan is an honors student who has received the Principal’s Award throughout his senior year, and is the recipient of the Maine State Principal’s Award, the University of Rochester Bausch and Lomb Science Award, he received the English and Social Studies award in his junior year, and was named student of the month for citizenship this year. Sullivan is active in Houlton High School’s band, jazz band, pep band, and symphonic band, and is on the varsity tennis team serving as captain all four years and making the All-County team in his junior year.
In his sophomore year, he traveled to the Czech Republic through the Rotary Youth Exchange program. Sullivan is a member of his church youth group and is a 3rd degree Knight of Columbus who enjoys volunteering at the animal shelter, working on community clean-ups, with the World War II Restoration Project, and at Rotary and Knights of Columbus fundraisers. He will attend James Madison University in Virginia, where he will major in business finance.

Barrett Dunn

Dunn is the son of Bart Dunn and Nancy Beasley of Houlton. He has received the Principal’s Award throughout his high school career and was student of the month for Excellence in Academic Studies during his junior year. He was also a member of Houlton High School’s state champion soccer team and Jazz Band. Dunn is active in band, jazz combo, show choir combo, and All Aroostook. In addition to his love for music and soccer, he enjoys volleyball, foosball and physics. He will attend the University of Maine in Orono, where he will major in engineering.
