PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Dr. William H. Cassidy, a trustee of the Maine Community College System and president emeritus of Washington County Community College (WCCC) in Calais, will be this year’s NMCC commencement speaker.
Cassidy earned his doctorate in higher education from Nova Southeastern University in Florida, and began his post-secondary education at Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute, now NMCC. To date, he is the only Maine Community College president who is a graduate from the system.
Cassidy’s career in education has spanned three decades at both the secondary and post-secondary levels. Before becoming president at WCCC, he served in a number of senior administrative posts within the Maine Community College System including director of statewide programs at the Center for Career Development. He also served as an associate commissioner for the Bureau of Adult and Secondary Vocational Education within the Maine Department of Education. Cassidy was the former director of the Waterville Regional Vocational Center, and taught at the middle, high school and college levels.
“We are very pleased to have Dr. Cassidy address our graduates,” said NMCC President Timothy Crowley. “As an alumnus of the Community College System, Dr. Cassidy serves as an excellent role model of the endless possibilities that exist when a person values education and possesses determination and a goal.”
Cassidy is a member of the Calais post American Legion and is a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He resides in Standish with his wife, Susan. They have two grown children, Patrick and Randee Lyn.
Commencement exercises begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at The Forum in Presque Isle. There are 231 students in the 2014 graduating class.
