Owl women win 3 of 4
The University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s basketball team used a balanced attack to defeat the visiting Eagles of Eastern Maine Community College, 68-52, Saturday.
The Owls had five players register double digits and were led by Amanda Hotham and Kristin Thompson, who each scored 14 points to help improve the Owls’ record to 12-4.
Sophomore Hotham also gathered 14 rebounds and Olivia McNally added 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Junior co-captain Brigette Pratt and Darby Toth rounded out the Owl players in double figures with 11 points each.
Kara Hebert led the Eagles (3-12) with 15 points and five rebounds. Carolyn Best had 12 points and 14 rebounds.
The previous Saturday, Jan. 18, the Owls were beaten by the Pine Manor Gators, 81-66. McNally scored 20 points in the loss.
On Jan. 15, UMPI downed SUNY-Canton in a game played in Randolph Center, Vt., 47-44. McNally led the way again with 20 points, five assists and five steals. The following evening, McNally poured in a career-high 31 points to go along with six rebounds, six assists and five steals in a win over St. Joseph’s (Vt.). Rebecca Campbell had a team-high 10 rebounds and Thompson netted 15 points.
The Owls played at Maine Maritime Tuesday and then are on the road for games at EMCC and SMCC Thursday and Saturday before returning home to take on Virginia-Lynchburg Sunday at noon.
Men beaten by Eagles
Eastern Maine Community College captured a hard-fought 84-79 victory over UM-Presque Isle Saturday at Wieden Gymnasium.
The seesaw affair had nine ties and 22 lead changes during the exciting 40 minutes of physical play. The Owls shot a blistering 56.9 percent from the field, including 9 of 17 from beyond the arc, but could not overcome late empty possessions and 21 turnovers, including 12 in the second half.
The Eagles (11-6) were led by Bryan Candelario with 28 points and five boards. Cote Card added 14 points and six rebounds to the winning effort.
Chase Vicaire continued his outstanding play of late, scoring 28 points, including 4 of 7 from three-point land. Freshman Thiago Conceicao added 16 points and six rebounds and Michael Warner tallied 14 points for the Owls.
On Jan. 18, UMPI was stopped by the No. 1 team in the USCAA, Central Maine Community College, 126-71. Vicaire had 22 points and eight rebounds for the Owls.
Coach Jim Casciano’s Owls played Bates College in Lewiston Tuesday. Games Thursday at EMCC and Saturday at SMCC follow before a home contest Sunday against Virginia-Lynchburg.
