The high school girls squads had a busy week, as they attempt to pick up as many tournament points as possible before the end of the season.
The Houlton Lady Shires had a full week of games. On Monday in Fort Kent, the Lady Shires triumphed 41-18 behind Sam Keegan’s 16 points.
Last Saturday, the Houlton girls traveled to Calais and suffered a 50-25 defeat.
Last Thursday in Caribou, Houlton topped the Vikings, 58-37, taking an eight-point opening lead and extending it to 16 points at halftime.
Houlton’s Katie Condon posted 18 points, while Natalie Hill notched 16 more.
For Caribou, Delaney Williams had 13 points.
The Lady Shires took a tough-luck loss last Tuesday night at home to Schenck, 50-48.
To start the game, Houlton took a 12-11 lead and extended it to four at halftime, 26-22. However, the Wolverines turned the tables in the third posting a 41-38 advantage over Houlton. A winner was not declared until time expired in the final period.
Bre Longstaff stuck a shot from the right block with seven seconds left to tie the game 48-all. But, Schenck was able to run the length of the court, get a shot off and win as time expired on Lexie Hoxie’s offensive putback on a rebound.
Hill paced Houlton with 13 points; Longstaff, 12; Condon, nine and Keegan, eight.
For Schenck, Morgan Thompson hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points.
The GHCA Lady Eagles met Madawaska in back-to-back games and played tough against host Limestone.
On Monday, the Lady Eagles overpowered host Madawaska, 62-36, as Colby Walker poured in 22 points and Makayla Watson put in 15 more. Kristen Brewer added 10 points, while Rylee Warman chipped in with nine and Jennah Carver netted six.
For Madawaska, Alexis Levesque scored 17 points.
Madawaska led 15-13 to open the game before GHCA took control. At halftime, GHCA held a 27-23 advantage and after three, they had built their lead to 48-27 en route to the win.
Last Thursday at the University of Maine Presque Isle, GHCA overtook visiting Madawaska, 48-35.
GHCA used a balanced scoring attack led by Warman and Watson with 12 points apiece. Walker netted 11 points; Carver, six and Brewer five more.
Desiree Belanger popped in 13 points for Madawaska.
Last Tuesday, the GHCA girls were defeated 57-48 in Limestone.
The Lady Eagles built a 24-21 halftime lead, but watched it dissolve when Limestone/MSSM used a strong second half to outscore them, 36-24.
Melissa Cantafio scored 15 of her 22 points in the second half and Alexis Bell netted 14.
For GHCA, Warman scored 16 points and was 6-for-7 from the line. Watson had 11 points while Walker had eight; Brewer, seven and Carver four.
The Hodgdon girls are still learning under first-year coach Cody Tompkins.
On Monday, the Hodgdon girls lost 59-12 in Limestone, as the undefeated Eagles took a 20-4 first-quarter lead and cruised.
Bell scored nine of her 11 points in the opening period for Limestone/MSSM.
For Hodgdon, Taylor Desrosier scored six points.
Last Thursday, the visiting Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors overpowered Hodgdon, 54-20.
Sable Altvater had a game-high 22 points, while Kennedi Smith added 11 and Mataya Hartin chipped in with 10.
For Hodgdon, Lauren Howell scored a dozen points.
Last Tuesday in Hodgdon, the Lady Hawks were overpowered by Fort Fairfield, 58-12.
Fort Fairfield was led in scoring by Logan Bubar with 12 points.
Howell scored half of Hodgdon’s points.
On Monday in Dyer Brook, the Crusaders led 21-13 at the half, but Southern Aroostook pulled to within a point, 28-27 in the third before Van Buren outscored SACS, 24-7 in the last period for a 52-34 win.
The game was stopped in the second quarter when Van Buren senior guard Parise Rossignol hit another milesone. Rossignol surpassed the all-time scoring record at Van Buren High School, which was 2,257 points set by her father and coach, Matt, in 1985. She needed 13 points to reach 2,257 points and she finished the game with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Rossignol now has 2,268 points.
Southern Aroostook’s Altvater led her team with 19 points.
The Katahdin Lady Cougars beat Central Aroostook girls Monday in Stacyville 56-36. Leading Katahdin was Delaney Fitzpatrick with 12 points, Courtney Stevens chipped in with nine, and Georgia Landry added eight points. Pacing Central Aroostook was Karli Levesque with 17 points, Kelsey Dominique added nine.
The East Grand Lady Vikings fell short on Monday in Easton, 59-35.
Easton led all at quarter breaks: 12-5; 25-12; and 44-22.
Kylee Carter put in four 3-pointers for a game-high 19 points for Easton. Kalie Ward recorded a double-double 13 points and 10 rebounds.
For East Grand, Sarah Stoddard scored 10 points, while Chelsea Winiarksi added eight points and Hayleigh Shay and Kim Stoddard each had five points.
On Saturday, the Wisdom Pioneers edged host East Grand, 34-31.
Wisdom led at all breaks: 15-7; 17-10; and 24-20.
Allie McEwen led East Grand with 10 points, while Winiarski chipped in with nine points and 11 boards.
For Wisdom, Rhylee Wright fired in 14 points.
On Friday, East Grand was in Woodland and suffered a 48-36 defeat.
Sarah Stoddard paced East Grand with 13 points, while McEwen added 11 more.
