Pets found abandoned at Ashland home

ASHLAND, Maine — Several pets were removed last week from an Ashland home and the owner charged for abandoning the animals.    “We received a report on Jan. 2 from the owner of the rental property that a tenant had abandoned several animals at the home when they moved. We went out and heard dogs inside,” said Sgt. Jarad Carney, of the Ashland Police Department, who also serves as the town’s animal control officer.
Carney said he found several animals living in deplorable conditions.
“The home, located on the Portage Road, had no heat. With the help of Christine Perry, an animal control agent with the state, we were able to remove two small dogs and three cats that had been living in horrible conditions. They were found living in their own feces with no water,” said Carney.
The pets were removed, according to Carney, and taken to the Central Aroostook Humane Society in Presque Isle. Their owner, Brenda Bouchard, was charged in connection with abandoning the animals.
“Bouchard has been charged with cruelty to animals. She’s signed the animals over to the shelter, so they’ll be available for adoption soon. Bouchard has been given a court date of Feb. 19 in Presque Isle District Court,” said Carney.
The Central Aroostook Humane Society took in the pets. Due to health issues, an older cat had to be euthanized. The remaining animals will be placed up for adoption. According to a Facebook post, one of the dogs has a health issue that requires medical treatment.
