The high school basketball season is heading into its second half with teams wrestling to gain important tournament index points.
Last week’s recaps for games played from Jan. 7-13 are as follows:
Hodgdon 27, Central Aroostook 43 — The Hodgdon Lady Hawks in a rebuilding year under first-year coach Cody Tompkins kept the game close last Friday in Mars Hill for the first half, but Central Aroostook went on a 19-3 scoring run to open the second half and pull away for the win. The only time Hodgdon led was after the first quarter, 11-9. The Lady Panthers then took over 19-15 and 38-18.
Karli Levesque led the way for Central Aroostook with 21 points and Kelsey Dominique added 12 points.
Lauren Howell scored 14 points for Hodgdon, with Summer Stoddard chipping in with nine.
On Monday, the Southern Aroostook girls put four players in double figures to overpower visiting Central Aroostook.
SACS 74, CAHS 31 — Host Southern Aroostook jumped out to a 24-13 first-quarter lead and built a 45-21 comfortable cushion at halftime.
Sable Altvater led Southern Aroostook with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Chloe Raymond tossed in 16 points; Kennedi Smith knocked down 14 and Jess Tucker collected 12 points.
Levesque paced Central Aroostook with 14 points.
SACS 50, Katahdin 43 — Last Thursday in Stacyville, the Lady Warriors pulled out the win behind Altvater’s 16 points, along with 10 points apiece from Smith, Raymond and Tucker.
For Katahdin, Molly Cunningham rang up a double-double with 10 points and 16 boards, while Delaney Fitzpatrick scored nine points and Morgan Livezey added seven more. Katahdin 44, Easton 51 —On Monday, the game slipped away from host Katahdin, who had led by one at halftime. Leading the way for Easton was Mariah Cyr with 19 points and Kylee Carter added 17. Katahdin was paced by Courtney Stevens with 15 points and Livezey added 10.
Katahdin 44, East Grand 34 — Last Wednesday, Katahdin held on to defeat East Grand behind Livezey’s 12 points; Fitzpatrick’s nine and Courtney Steven’s seven.
For East Grand Sarah Stoddard had 15 points and Allie McEwen added nine.
GHCA 68, Hodgdon 21 — Last Wednesday, the GHCA girls overtook host Hodgdon behind eighth-grader Kristin Brewer’s 22 points. Colby Walker tossed in 12 and eighth-grader Grace Graham chipped in with 10 more.
For Hodgdon, Stoddard and Taylor Desrosiers each posted six points.
GHCA led throughout the game: 12-2; 38-4 and 56-10.
GHCA 49, Limestone/ MSSM 52 — In a dog fight last Tuesday, which came down to the last four seconds, the Eagles battled at the University of Maine Presque Isle.
The Limestone/MSSM Eagles came out with the win when Mariah Williams nailed a 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds left in the game. The GHCA Lady Eagles had a chance to tie the game, but the shot fell short.
GHCA led 12-11 and 26-21, but the game was tied after the third, 35-all.
Makayla Watson had an outstanding offensive game with an 18-point effort, while Rylee Warman and Walker each tallied nine points for GHCA.
For Limestone/MSSM, Williams scored a game-high 22 points, while Melissa Cantafio had 10 points and seven boards.
